Hello, I am currently working on my college lists and wondering about the advanced placement scores of the new admits to Cornell. It would be great if you can help. Thanks a lot in advance!
I’m curious why you’re specifically interested in this metric. Generally speaking, colleges do not care very much about an applicant’s AP scores, if at all.
AP scores are self reported so most applicants only submit 4s and 5s. So, that isn’t the metric to use while building a college list. I would recommend looking up the Common Data Set for each school you are considering to see the profile of the incoming class. Look at section C. https://irp.dpb.cornell.edu/wp-content/uploads/2023/03/CDS_2022-2023_Cornell-University-v5.pdf
They really want to know you took the most rigorous schedule available and did well.
So, you should have taken largely honors and AP whenever available (and that varies a lot by high school).
So, it’s more about what you took and your grades. Senior year AP scores won’t come in until July well after acceptances.
Besides my ECs, I want to show my academic excellence as well. Therefore, I took a couple of hard APs in my junior year. If they really do not care, it was a bit of an extra work for me
It’s work that pays off because you will be better prepared for rigorous classes. Or, some colleges will give you credit for those classes. Many colleges will let you place out of intro level courses if you have high AP scores. Hard work isn’t a waste of time.
This wasn’t a waste of your time. Schools definitely care about your course rigor and grades in those classes. The AP scores themselves aren’t as important for admissions, but you could receive college credit based on your scores. Every school has a AP credit section on their website explaining how much credit you can receive. Good luck on your college application journey!
They care about your coursework, so in that sense AP courses are valuable. While the scores on the exams might validate your grades, the scores themselves are most useful for credit and/or placement.
