I can enter as a frosh this Summer accepted to Smeal OR enter in Fall in the school of liberal arts (econ) or (public relations) school of communication.

What difference would it make? Advantages of starting off in Smeal?

I think all freshmen wait until soph year to declare a major anyway. Right?

Anyone who really knows all these fine points and ins and outs?

I have no experience but I would go into the college that I want to major in not undecided…If your major is business, do the summer program and goto smeal then again going into liberal arts would eliminate the summer season which will make it cheaper…

Have an opportunity to do an amazing mission trip this Summer. Planned on majoring in marketing (Smeal), but could major in public rel/advertising or corporate communication or econ instead.Just not sure if taking myself out of Smeal as a new freshman really matters.

First - congrats on your acceptance ~ My D is currently in her second semester at UP and loves it! She is officially DUS, but will be transferring into the School of Communications for next semester, just so that she can get advising from them as she feels that’s ultimately where she’s going to land anyway; ADV/PR with a minor in Spanish. To answer your Q, what they told us in the parent meeting last year, and at FTCAP, was that no one is actually ‘accepted’ into one of the schools/majors as a freshman. You may be accepted into Smeal, Eberly, etc., however no one declares a major until the end of the third semester, and due to some having controlled admission, you still need to meet the requirements. If you were to do Smeal vs. Communications you would simply have a Smeal Advisor - probably more knowledgeable about what course track works best for you and your academic/degree goals. However, you would still need to maintain a certain GPA I believe. As far as summer, my D decided to do LEAP instead of wait until fall and she never regretted it. She felt so much more confident about campus, had already made alot of friends and it really gave her a jumpstart on making that transition. Not to mention - going into first semester with 6 additional credits on top of any AP credits was nice. Best of luck to you - -

Hi PUPSMOM has given you a lot of great information. My son had contacted admissions to ask about summer acceptance (w/Smeal) vs Fall (w/o Smeal). You can apply later, however, Smeal is one of the hardest schools along with Engineering to get into on Campus. You are encouraged to apply your freshman year unless you are undecided about business altogether. Undecided (DUS) will help you explore your options. The accepted students (Smeal) will have a business advisor and must maintain a certain GPA. Worried about that? PUPSMOM mentioned the early credits you earn for attending in the summer. My son choose the summer session/Smeal because it makes the most sense for him. Good Luck!
