Advantages of sending application early?

Are there any advantages to sending the application early (maybe before one week before the deadline)?

You mean strategically, in terms of your likelihood of acceptance? No.

Well the “advantage” is that you don’t run into trouble with deadline.

How much earlier than the deadline would you recommend sending the application to be on the ‘safe side’ (in case of delivery problems etc.)?

In case of delivery problems, the admissions office is very flexible and will happily allow you to re-submit a part that was lost by the post office, or to extend the deadline for online submission if there is a problem with their servers.

You should submit your application early enough that you don’t feel rushed completing it. For me, that would be at least a week in advance, and probably more if I could, but YMMV depending on how early you prefer to be in other areas of your life.

yeah, follow mollie’s advice here.

Whereas, I would be tweaking it right up until the last day. I would tend to submit closer to 24 hours before the deadline, but everyone is different. What is clear is that MIT admissions officers do read all the folders together, so being a couple of weeks early does not do anything at all to your admissions chances.
