Advice/Chances

I was looking for some advice on how I should apply to college and the ED/EA process. I am planning on applying to UMich as soon as applications open up in August but I am unsure whether to apply ED to Dartmouth or UPenn or EA to Stanford.

What I’m wondering is if EA/ED will increse my chances of getting into the school, I like every school for a different reason and believe that I would be happy at anyone. Dartmouth because its scenery change/i like the country and because i’m interested in medical school probably in a city and living in a city. Penn because Philadelphaia is an area that is ripe with opportunities for internships and the city will provide a greater degree of culture. Stanford because its one of the top research instituions in the world, is in beautiful California, and because its in a more suburban environment that is in the center of Silicon Valley but still relatively isolated. I’m wondering if Stanford is absolutely out of my league and I shouldnt apply EA but instead favor one of the lesser reach schools where ED will increase my changes of getting into the scools.

You should be in the running at Stanford. EA does not greatly affect your chances, but makes for a very nice second semester if you get in…

If you decide to stop taking French after level IV, take SAT II. At Stanford it may even satisfy your foreign lang requirement (You have to get >630 if I remember correctly). As a general rule, it is better to have at least 3 years of foreign language, unless you get to the top level that your school offers.

I’m not too confident on taking the French SATII as I stopped taking French during my sophmore year. So it doesnt matter if i took the foreign language for two years in middle school and two years in high school?

middle school doesn’t really count.

your numbers are definitely good enough for stanford so i would apply EA. Just make sure you have great essays and teacher recs. I believe you should have no problem w/ the other schools on your list, regular decision.

Thanks for the advice, will the foreign language hurt me if i send in a letter explaining the situation? Passion of science and mathematics, my school requires only two foreign languages so my counselor told me to drop it, not good advice in retrospect since i got forced into a ****ty reg class because thats all that would fit

bump bump bump

You could call the admissions and ask.

My guess is that they will recommend 3 years of HS foreign language, unless you have a proof of proficiency (like SAT II or AP score). Or they might tell you that they consider every case individually-- but that would not mean that not having 3 years won’t hurt you…
