Advice concerning potential job email for soon to be grad

S2 is graduating in May and has started the job search. For the past 2 summers, he has interned at a company in our home city (DC). At the end of last summer, he had a very positive talk with them about a potential position after graduation. They didn’t completely commit but wanted him to touch-base, etc.

Several weeks ago, he attended the job fair at his university and as a result, got an interview from a similar company but in a different city. Interview went well and he got an offer. He has 30 days to make a decision. Although he is thrilled to have received an offer (was not expecting it at all), he really wants to be here in DC but hates to turn down any job.

He is now drafting an email to the summer internship place - touching base, etc. Is it wise to tell them about the other job offer? He does not want to appear pushy but wants to make it clear he would much rather work with them. The job he was offered and his potential job at summer internship place would be virtually identical.

Any experience/thoughts?

If I were your son, I would send an e-mail to the summer internship place telling them exactly what you’ve told us.

The worst they can say is no.

Absolutely he should tell them about the other offer and the deadline. I have been in executive recruiting for 20+ years and there is no harm in using that leverage.

Thank you! That is what he was wondering and with zero experience in HR or recruiting we were unsure about how to advise.
