Advice for BAD hair highlights

DD wanted professional highlights for her 16th birthday. Long story short, the highly regarded stylist left the bleach on too long and my daughter’s long curly blonde hair was filled with huge, frizzy, white stripes. Sounds pretty, doesn’t it?

I was speechless, my daughter was in tears and mortified so we just hightailed it out of there. After a frantic phone call to my stylist she graciously worked my daughter in and put toner on her hair to take the white out. Her hair looks better but is still really pale and stripey.

I am debating calling the original stylist because I’m not sure if I want her touching DD’s hair again. My thought is to ask her what she would do and then talk to DD and my stylist to see if it’s a good plan.

Yup. I paid for it. I was so shocked I didn’t know what to say or do.

Should I bother calling the original stylist? Any ideas about the best plan to fix the stripes and minimize the roots? DD is a competitive swimmer which also complicates things. (Stylist knew about the swimming.)

I would return to the original salon for a consultation with the stylist and the salon manager/owner if possible. They should work with you to fix it without any additional charge.

I also would return to the original salon for a consultation with the salon manager and the original stylist. I would simply want the original stylist there to let the manager know what was done. I would then leave it up to the salon manager if he/she wanted to work with you/your daughter or if they have a color specialist. It really depends on the salon. They should work with you without additional charge. When you make the appointment for the consultation I would request a keratin conditioning treatment to protect your daughters hair. As hard as it may be, best results are when you/your daughter just deal with the facts at hand and try your best not to blame, just move forward. If there is blaming the manager may very well back the stylist in front of you. That is not likely to be the case behind closed doors. There’s no hiding from the results of what the stylist did to your daughters hair so just let that speak for itself. Good luck.

You could try dying her hair back to her natural color, but I would make sure you have a professional do it. A semi permanent color would minimize the root issue. I have a great colorist and he only puts a semi permanent color on my hair to color the gray. After years of highlighting I prefer this. I am assuming her hair is long?

I wouldn’t go back to the salon, your d won’t be comfortable with the stylist working on her hair again- and I wouldn’t trust her. She must have known she had made an error and should have put a toner in straight away.

Sorry- nothing worse that a bad hair color.

^ Oh, I respectfully disagree…a bad cut is much worse then bad color! Color can be corrected much quicker with a skilled technician. I thought of a semi permanent color as well, however it does wash out in 4-6 weeks and the streaks would still be there so kind of a band-aid on a gash? That’s what we’ve finally gone to this last appointment as the highlights weren’t quite camouflaging the grey. :(

If the OPs daughter does not feel comfortable going back to the salon they have to be prepared to pay to have the problem fixed somewhere else (sometimes worth it) and have another colorist go in blindly without knowing all the details of what the first stylist did. It does sound like the OP has a pretty good handle on what happened and could relate that to someone else. If you go somewhere else I would get a very good referral to a color specialist so you’re not jumping out of the frying pan into the fire.

In the meantime, try to pick up a sulfate free shampoo that’s going to be very gentle on your DD’s hair. You can get them now at the grocery store. I believe Loreal and Aveeno both make one at about $7. I like Pureology but that is going to run $25.

^^ like blueiguana said, the sulfate free Loreal is great. I use this one, and it has made a huge difference. I also use the conditioner that goes with it.
