Advice for D27 who is interested in theater/acting?

I have a D27 who is very interested in acting and appears to have some talent in that area. (She is generally a creative kid - other strengths are art and creative writing - but acting is the biggest passion so far.) It is a little too early to think about college programs. But this is an area I know nothing about, and I wonder what she should do in order to help her pursue her acting interest, and be adequately prepared should she ultimately decide to pursue a BFA in acting. She is involved in theater at school, but she attends a very small school so the opportunities are somewhat limited. Are there particular summer programs she should explore? After-school classes? Audition for something or other? We live in NYC, so there are certainly plenty of theater-related programs and classes near us, but it is hard for me to assess whether they are useful or good. Any advice would be much appreciated.

She’s in 9th grade, living in NYC. Did she apply to any of the NYC magnet performing arts public schools? Is it too late to apply for next fall?

Unfortunately, these schools were not a good fit for her for other reasons. She’s a complex 2e kid, and she needs a small, nurturing school environment. She’s attending a private school with a strong arts program but performing arts are a little more limited.

Your best bet would be to find a local after school drama group for her, starting now.

If you are right that she has exceptional talent in this area, you could have her audition for summer programs. Juilliard has a summer drama program. There are many others. I’m sure there’s a thread on here for summer drama programs.
