Our elder daughter is a couple months from starting grad school in Honolulu. I will be , ahem, showing my maternal devotion by going out there with her “to get her settled”. She will be living off campus & but besides that she has nothing particular in mind. I would love to get the apartment hunting over quickly so I can visit some of the nearby state parks (one of my obsessions, for some reason). If anyone has advice about apartment hunting near the campus or about life in Hawaii in general, I would be very grateful.

P.S. Since I am fan of exploring nature & we have enjoyed whale watching on Maui before, I am thinking about getting her binoculars for a “moving to Hawaii” gift. Also a SPF rated umbrella like we found in Japan & are for sale on Amazon but would love suggestions on good gift ideas too.

Honolulu is very expensive. Would advise checking craigslist now to get an idea re: how much apartments cost. Lots of kids share apartments due to cost. UH Manoa does have graduate student housing and there are some private off-campus student housing options. Check UH Housing website for off-campus apartment/share postings. If you can find something furnished then you won’t need to buy furniture (another huge expense). Probably best to be within walking distance of campus and/or on the bus line (“The Bus”) and close to a grocery store (Safeway, Foodland). Lots of kids buy mopeds to get around. FYI - it rains a lot so always have an umbrella with you!

My Uncle went to University of Hawaii Manoa during WW2. He was one of four Haoles on campus. Every where you look there is something to explore. Punchbowl, Botanical Gardens, yes…art museum…different beaches and Pearl Harbors. I went to Oahu, as a kid…about 18 times…and as a family another 4 or 5 times. (We always go to Maui)

Thanks for this. I took a peek at Craig’s List & pointed my daughter there too. She needs to find out what side of campus the Linguistics Department is on so she can get an idea of what neighborhoods would make the most sense.

Thanks again! My husband & I were married & pretty settled when we went to grad school. We found our own place then & our kids lived on campus for undergrad. I had never even considered that a school would have such resources. Blush
