Advice for Living Off-Campus?

So, my boyfriend and I are looking for a place off-campus and we both really like the Silverlake/Los Feliz area. Is it a really bad idea for commuting on the bus? I have commuted by bus in the past and that was about an hour commute (not in LA). I am open to living in Santa Monica or Venice but it seems difficult to find a place in our $1200 budget.

The bus usually takes 1 - 2 hours to get to anywhere in L.A. Santa Monica and Venice are expensive and Silverlake/Los Feliz area are around the same, maybe a little less expensive because of how close they are to hollywood and downtown. I would say rent a room a mile or so away from UCLA or somewhere where the bus passes alot.

Here is he bus system map. http://media.metro.net/riding_metro/maps/images/System_Map.pdf</a>

the #2 bus seems to go straight from silverlake/los feliz area to UCLA. google it and look at the bus schedule

I heard Santa Monica has a great bus system. I am from LA and know about commuting and traffic, I HATE the bus in general but with a car you worry about insurance, parking and gas.you will save LOTS OF $$$$ and I think you should take the bus because the quarterly pass is only $50

A commute from Silverlake to UCLA would take at least 1-1/2 hour each way. If $1200 is your budget, you may want to look at rooms in Palms, Culver City, Venice. I know a friend who used to rent a master bedroom in Venice for around $1200 to 1300.
