Advice for Self-Study?

Next year my sister will be learning AP Calc, Chem, and Spanish in school. She self-studied two APs in 10th grade. She wants to get 8 APs with a 4/5 in order to get the National AP Scholar award before 12th grade. Therefore, she’s planning on self-studying three for next year. In 2010, Chem, Calc, and span will be monday, tuesday, and wednesday of the first week. She’s planning on studying a few in the second week… like Human Geography and English Language. But she’s stuck on studying a third. She’s completely psych and env sci already. Any thoughts? and what books should she use for english language and hg?

Try US Gov, one of the econs, or Comp gov

I self studied for Bio, the two econ’s, and US Gov and Politics. Bio was a pain in the butt that I ultimately gave up on, and by some miracle pulled off a 4. The econs are more practice. I was lucky, or unlucky, in that I had some competition in economics that pretty much forced me to learn the material. I used a 5 steps to a 5 book for both exams, and got a 5 on macro and a 4 on micro.

The two English AP’s are not bad, at all. The multiple choice sections are very much SAT-esque, albeit with a tad more emphasis on literary devices. The essays are not that bad either. The DBQ is not hard to write, you just have to learn how to write one. The other two for Language weren’t bad at all, although I don’t remember what they were. The Lit exam is very similar in terms of multiple choice, but the essays are a little different. One analyses a piece of prose, one a poem, and the last, a specific subject in any work of literary merit. None of them hard to write, provided you learn how to write them.

As for what books to use to self study for English… Princeton Review’s will probably suit you fine. Grab nice lists of rhetorical and literary devices and memorize them. Write the essays, and try to improve on your writing a bit.

For English language, is Cliffs okay? I heard it was good.

Also, what prep book do you recommend for US Gov? Is Ethel Wood’s guide good for US Gov?

(Keep in mind this is independent study)
