D and a friend are traveling to Dublin and she asked me to see if I cold find a hotel (she is studying for an exam and it is a last-minute trip - her friend just decided yesterday that she is coming). Any suggestions? Non-smoking is important, but from what I understand, most (all?) hotels in Ireland are non-smoking. Air conditioning, though, seems not to be standard - which probably wouldn’t be too much of a problem except for locations that are noisy. And of course, it would be nice to be near the city center.
D2 leaves for Dublin today. Staying at an apartment found thru airbnb.
What is the budget?
Nrdsb4: I did look at airbnb but I think they are booking to late for anything really good - the listings for their dates are either for a studio, or a house that’s a bus ride from the city, or a new listing without any feedback (not brave enough for those).
doschicos: Hoping to find something for around $125/night. Not sure yet if that’s realistic.
Five years ago, we stayed in a place across from the bus station called “Globetrotters.” It’s mostly known as a hostel, but half of it, called The Townhouse, is regular rooms. I remember it as quiet, inexpensive, and not far from the center of things. Can’t vouch for present circumstances, but we had an excellent stay there.
In Dublin there are many hostels, some connected to B & Bs. I found them to be safe, clean, a great place to meet other young people traveling. Here is a great site for a listing of hostels, B & Bs, and sime hitems – http://www.hostelworld.com/hostels/Dublin?s_kwcid=AL!591!3!103916383940!e!!g!!dublin%20hostels&source=adwordsenglobaltopdestmob&network=g&creative=103916383940&adposition=1t1&uniqueclickID=4850039831022642320&sub_keyword=dublin%20hostels&sub_ad=e&sub_publisher=ADW&ef_id=VEzijgAABKI6K4KM:20160605003920:s
We stayed here when we went to Dublin two years ago: http://www.staycity.com/dublin/st-augustine-street/ My son’s college used it for their Dublin study abroad students and it was in an excellent location. Within walking distance of everything and down the street from a bus stop and the oldest pub in Dublin!
^^^^That looks awesome.
@Nrdsb4, it really was perfect. I had originally made a reservation for this place for the first few days of our stay and then at a B&B for the second part of our trip (we did a week traveling in-between) but we liked it so much, we cancelled the B&B and just stayed at staycity. I really appreciated the washer and dryer. I think there was a dryer. I sort of remember a drying rack… It’s not that easy to find a place that is more like an apartment than a hotel room for such a good price.
roflmao…a/c is NOT an Irish thing except in top hotels. Dublin just had a major heat wave- lasted 5 days, including a weekend! People were gasping with the heat, talking about how the sun was splitting the stones, walking around half dressed and lobster red. A friend said that it got up to 25C in her garden, but the official high was 21. That’s 77 and 70 respectively…
Seconding the St Augustine Apts (also their Temple Bar ones, but they are a lot pricier)
When looking at accommodation in Ireland watch out for the evil little letters pps: per person sharing. Staycity doesn’t do this but a shocking number of places do. So you see a not-too-bad price…and then find out it is pps…
