I know many of you read the “Advice: Take Freshman Seminars” post I wrote, and so I decided to make another “Freshman Advice” post. For those of you that missed it:

So here is my second piece of advice for all of you: Hit the ground running.

What do I mean? You need to start working right off the bat, and make sure that you study, go to lecture, and do all the homework for your classes. College isn’t like high school, so classes like math, biology, and chem aren’t going to be “easy As.” So yeah, start out strong, study hard, and enjoy the rest of your summer!

Not to mention that if you have a high gpa your first quarter, you’ll have more of a incentive to keep it high, (or possibly see it as a buffer). I totally agree with Fooshy, keep up the great work!

I’m not sure about engineering, but in my upper div ochem and biology classes the prof made it a point to mention there is no quota for A’s; theoretically everyone could get A’s if they wanted to. It’s just that it usually turns out that ~15% of the class gets A’s.

sorry, there’s really no point to this, just venting, because I’m trying to take this advice and not fall behind but all of my reading is sort of eating me alive :(

Question, though, for current students…do you have any tips to help make the reading a little bit easier or faster?

when reading, no computer or tv or any kind of entertainment in front of you. go somewhere quiet
and go to free tuitoring at dutton? Study the notes from classes first! than read the part that you dont understand in textbook.

ughhhhhhh im so disappointed right now. i just got the results from my first che2a midterm and lets just say i didnt do so hot… =/

it feels as though there will be no way that i can make a good grade this quarter in that class because im already starting out so bad. is there still hope? do you guys have any advice? how did you guys study for your chem exams?

peanut_butter, i have found that it REALLY helps to have study partners in your classes. do you have anyone else to work with in your class? on the homework assignments, after you do them and have someone to compare your answers with, you can see if your doing them right or wrong. it helps if you have one or 2 other people to share and spread info with.
