Advice On Getting Into Ivy League?

Hey everyone! I am a freshman (grade 9), currently living in Ontario, Canada. I go to a highly competitive high school, ranked #5 in the entire province. My marks are on average 96% to 99% in many subject areas, including Business Technology, French, Construction Technology and more. I am a multilingual person, able to communicate in four languages fluently. I am currently open to any Ivy League University in the states more preferably than Canada. I participate in many extracurriculars as well. I like to volunteer and take initiative. I help my fellow peers with tutoring in Academic Subjects such as Math, Science, French, Construction Technology and Business Technology.

Since you aren’t vey specific about your class grades and difficulty I can’t really judge based off of that. As long as you get As in honors classes you will be fine. Your ECs are good, however, there may be a flaw with having so many. Ivies look for students who have shown passion in their extracurriculars. Make sure that you are passionate about every extracurricular that you participate in. Don’t participate in so many that you are not able to really shine.

Dude calm down, you’re only a freshman.
Just focus on getting very good grades and taking the hardest classes available (without having an impossible workload).
Find 2-3 extracurriculars you really like and focus on those.
Try to do a sport, art or instrument, and a club.

It would be much better to be nationally ranked (top 20) in one EC than all of the EC’s you have listed. Again since you’re a freshman you’ll need to make sure your test scores and grades are top notch trough high school.

Thanks for your reply. I am taking the hardest available courses for every core subject: here in Canada, it is known as Academic level. My averages in these are levelled out to 97%. For EC I see your point there. Do you think I should pursue Karate AND swimming as my sports? Any recommendations? Thank you!

If you think you can be a recruited athlete in swimming that’s what I would go for, if not be as good as you can be.

keep in mind there are more than just ivy league schools in the world

Some issues to think about (and noting that you have a lot of time):

  • Canadian companies mostly recruit from Canadian universities. If you graduate from a US university, then getting a visa to work in the US can be difficult or impossible. Graduating from university in the US, even a really top one, getting a job interview in Canada can be just as difficult. Thus you probably will have a much easier time getting a better job if you go to university in Canada (unless in all of your travels you have already gotten a US permanent resident visa or US citizenship).
  • There are a LOT of very good universities in Ontario. If you want to venture out, McGill is excellent (and I notice that you speak French, not needed to go to McGill but still a significant plus if you are living in Montreal). There are quite a few other good universities in Canada also (UBC, .......).
  • University in the US can be VERY expensive. Scholarships are rare for international students. Details will differ significantly, but you very likely won't know what a university in the US is going to cost until you get the admission offer back with financial aid details.
  • Getting into top universities in the US is somewhat random.

Also, of course you have a lot of time to think about this. There is no hurry. I do agree with other comments above that you should focus on ECs that you like, and are passionate about.

To get in as an international, you really have to be one of the best applicants in Canada. This means top grades where you finish in the top 1-3% of your class, high standardized test scores (1550+ on the SAT or a 34+ on the ACT), and, most importantly, outstanding ECs. Examples of outstanding ECs include becoming a recruitable swimmer, starting a large volunteer organization, winning national science awards, holding leadership positions in several clubs, and getting published in a top newspaper or magazine.

I recommend that you search up ivy league results pages (such as this: http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/harvard-university/1939648-harvard-class-of-2021-scea-results-only-thread.html) and finding ECs that you might be interested in.
