Advice on transferring with less than 60 credits?

Hello!

I’m going to try to make this as straightforward as possible! After graduating high school I decided to take a gap semester off (Fall 2014) in order to be able to work as well as go to a flight school and to simply straighten myself out a bit. I definitely was not near the best student in high school. I then started in the Spring at a 4 year university while taking 5 classes. My father unfortunately passed away very unexpectedly and I ended up dropping 2/5 classes because I was not able to keep up with everything that was going on. I put myself together at the end of the semester and I managed to get all A’s in the 3 classes I was still taking. My goal is to transfer to a “better” school, preferably GWU or of that standard. My question is: by dropping those 2 classes will my chances of transferring suffer? I am retaking the SAT next weekend, taking 3 classes in the summer and 5 in the fall. And is there anything else that anyone might be able to recommend that I do? I know this is a straightforward question that doesn’t need to be answered by an expert or anything but I wanted to hear possibly some new, original ideas that might help me out a bit!

Thank you!

Sorry for your loss.

As long as you dropped the 2 classes by the drop or withdraw deadline, you should be fine. Does your transcript say W next to the classes you dropped? If you dropped after the withdraw deadline (usually the midpoint of the semester) you may have WF, which is the equivalent to failing. Although, I’m sure you probably would have noticed a drop in your GPA if you got WFs.

More importantly, make sure you have enough credits to transfer, and a high GPA (along with fulfilling the other requirements, of course).

Check the transfer requirements at GWU and the other places on your list, and make certain that you meet them. Many places don’t require that you complete 60 semester hours before applying.
