I’m currently a junior in high school. The extracurriculars I’ve done in high school have been mostly academic to this point. I’ve spent my time doing math competitions (AMC, ARML, and local competitions), USACO, and quiz bowl. In my spare time, I’ve worked on hobbies such as cubing, chess, learning Mandarin (I’m fluent), learning new programming languages, and working on open source coding projects and publishing them on Github. My ACT scores are pretty good (34 composite), I’ve gotten an 800 on the SAT Math and Chemistry Subject Tests, and I have a 4.3 GPA, getting a 5 on the AP Comp. Sci., Physics, and Calc. BC exams. My goal as far as a career is to work in San Francisco as a data scientist. Given my qualifications, what universities could I go to near San Francisco to make my goal come true? Also, what scholarships would I have a good chance at getting to cover my tuition and board expenses while I’m in college. I’m currently in the Owensboro, Kentucky area, if that helps.
You do not need to attend a college in the San Francisco area to get a job there once you graduate.
- What can your parents pay/year for you to attend college?
- If you want to become a data scientist, do you plan to major in Data Science or something else?
- You have good stats so if you are looking for scholarships (merit aid) then you need to target private schools.
with your stats, there are private schools in N Cal that will probably give you a free ride or close to it. St Mary’s and UOP among them. Santa Clara will also offer significant aid.
The public schools will not provide any funding, so your best bet would be the private universities listed above. Public universities in the direct San Francisco area will not be affordable.
Living expenses, are sometimes more than the actual costs of the universities.
