Advice: UNC EA vs. RD- (in state) [B grades in summer college classes]

Yes, EA is accept, reject or waitlist. No defer to regular cycle like many schools which is why I mentioned in case that wasn’t known. Not sure how much waitlist movement there is, but common data set would show.

Thank you for posting this - I had no idea that they didn’t defer to regular decision. Since we’re out of state and the out of state admit rate is so low, I’m expecting my S25 won’t get in and I had assumed he’d get deferred. With this info, I’ll say that he will likely get a waitlist or reject, there are just too many good candidates. It’s good for me to be able to start preparing him for that potentiality.

Not much waitlist movement at UNC. A waitlist decision is often referred to as the “soft NO”.

I would apply EA. You have just as much chance as anyone else. Cracking the code of UNC in-state acceptances has yet to be done. Every year there are outliers that get in with few AP classes and borderline GPA’s. Could be EA’s or great essays or major choice (even though UNC claims that’s not a factor), or teacher recs. I would make sure all those things are as strong as possible and then throw your hat into the ring and see what happens at the end of January.

This can be advantageous compared to schools that defer all non-admitted applicants, which gives false hope to the majority who have no chance of admission. The applicant rejected in EA knows to move on and perhaps alter the rest of the application list accordingly.

EA results come end of january. Not much time to react and change stuff.

UNC also does a strange thing to top students from competitive students who are waitlisted and then denied. They offer a guaranteed year 2 transfer provided they have a successful first year at whatever college they go to. I have two friends’ kids who were offered this (and will do it).

I also had one friend’s child who was waitlisted EA and then accepted in RD. That is pretty unheard of. They were shocked as waitlist people are told they will not hear until June 1 or later.

This guaranteed sophomore transfer requires a 3.30 college GPA in at least 30 credits of college courses, according to I've accepted my Sophomore Guarantee offer. What do I need to do now? - Undergraduate Admissions .

Wow. Lots of options.

Have you started narrowing down ?

Congrats.

I assume based on the first post UNC is yiur favored.

On the other hand, Levine would be amazing - both financially, enrichment wise and few get to experience programs like these.

Great gets all throughout.

Congrats.
