FYI, UNC has moved up their EA decision date for In-State Applicants. Historically they used a date towards the end of January and typically would release a week to 10 days before the listed date. They’ve decided to move the listed date to December 20th for In-State Applicants.
I noticed somebody pulled the band aid off and went first the year my daughter was applying, so I guess I’ll go this time.
Stats: In-state, 4.0 unweighted, 1540 SAT, 26 DE credits to date, taking 19 more this year + AP Calc. Lots of leadership, 4 Varsity sports, some volunteering that ties into engineering(but probably his weakest point).
He is looking at the Applied Sciences Engineering. I am curious if anyone here has any experience with the new engineering program in the Applied Sciences school? Engineering is his current intended major and all signs point to NC State as the right choice, but his sibling goes to UNC and it’s not off the table for him yet. Were he to get in and choose UNC, he would try for a double major in business, engineering or engineering major with business minor. And we are PUMPED about the earlier EA in-state decision date that crapshooter posted. Would love for NC State to follow suit. Good luck to all!
Stats for my DD: OOS, 4.0 UW, 1530 superscore, will have taken 9 APs and 3 DEs including DE Multivariable Calc and AP German, 5s on the 7 AP tests taken plus a 5 on the Calc AB subscore. ECs: Varsity Cross Country 3 years, captain this year, made it to States twice, Varsity Indoor and Outdoor Track all 4 years, hospice volunteer all 4 years, German Club president, and some other minor things. Honors are weak: Commended Scholar, NHS, German Honor Society, AP Scholar with Distinction. Applying for Econ or Business. We know it’s a long shot because she’s OOS.
Hey everyone, UNC '29 admit here- if you or your student needs help proofreading/editing essays, shoot me a message!
Great Stats - Mecklenburg or Wake County Public School?
Reminder - EA deadline for UNC is today.
Also, the admission process for KFBS has changed since last year, not only expanding the numbers in business school but also moving towards a substantial portion of the B-School class to be admitted through their new assured pathway (Assured Pathway Freshman still start with Gen Ed situation but they are assured entry into KFBS as long as they’ve met the published criteria) - You do need to find the “Special Opportunities” portion on the UNC supplemental app and check of the box for KFBS for them to evaluate your student for KFBS Pathway once they have already been admitted to UNC.
(EDIT: proceed with caution. Another parent pointed out that this data seems slightly unreliable and I have to agree. After looking at prior years, it seems a bit off. You can look at past years to get a sense of score data.) The new data was released on SAT/ACT scores from last year’s admissions cycle for NC Schools. I’m providing the link. If you’re looking at this on a computer screen, you can toggle different data points on the left-hand side. For instance, just in-state or out of state, applied vs admitted, etc. It’s really interesting data. Every year it changes so take everything with a grain of salt. Anywhoo, good luck to everyone!
I like this data, though some of it is a little hard to believe. It claims that out of the 367 OOS students who submitted SATs, 333 were accepted and 308 enrolled. I know at least 5 kids who were accepted and did not enroll. And to go from 6109 submitting SATs in 2024 to only 367 submitting in 2025 for OOS is a huge jump. Nonetheless, it seems like if you don’t have stellar SATs (1500+), there’s no downside to going test optional. Last year my D25 had a 1460 and was rejected, but she’s at UVA and thriving now. This year my D26 has a 1560, so we will see if that makes any difference with such a low OOS acceptance rate.
You bring up some valid points. The data seems a little “off” when compared to prior years and I agree the admit to accept seems improbable. Maybe someone input a bunch of SAT scores into the ACT column and threw everything off. It’s weird that both in-state and oos have the same crazy swing to mostly ACT scores. So anyway, definitely proceed with caution when looking at this link. The years prior do seem to show a healthy balance. I put it up real fast before digging around any further. Congrats on UVA, amazing school.
Hi! My daughter is OOS and I know it says decisions for OOS EA should be received by 2/10. Does anyone know if decisions might come earlier (perhaps January) or do they all go out around the 2/10 date? Chapel Hill is one of her favorites and February seems so far away! Lol
Thanks!
Last year decisions were released on Jan 24, so hopefully they’re early again this year.
Parent of EA OOS applicant here. Received a letter today acknowledging our kid’s application. Was a bit disconcerting since it came in a thin envelope and started out the first paragraph like it was a rejection letter. Anyway, i understand all EA applicant parents receive this and it is just procedural at UNC Chapel Hill…but still. In 2025, how is that worth the postage to send it? And why?
Looking at prior year threads, this letter means nothing - UNC unlikely letter? - #50 by Ae1231

Dear Parent or Guardian:
On behalf of the Office of Undergraduate Admissions, I write to express our gratitude for [redacted’s] decision to apply for admission to the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. We’re fortunate at Carolina to have the interest of many smart and good-hearted students, and we appreciate the opportunity to get to know [redacted].
As we begin to review applications submitted by our early action applicants, we want to provide some insights about our application review process. When we review an application, we don’t rely on a formula. Instead, we consider each student individually and comprehensively, paying special attention to their range of academic achievements, contributions to their community, and impact on friends and family. We appreciate the time and effort that students put into applying for admission, and we work diligently to treat each applicant with care.
We’re grateful that [redacted] is considering Carolina. If we can help answer any questions while [redacted] is waiting to hear from us, please contact our office. Our admissions officers would be happy to help.
Interesting. My daughter is OOS and did not receive anything, but maybe it’s still in transit. I agree it seems a little odd.
My son received this today as well.
My kid applied EA quite some time ago and I don’t recall receiving that letter but it’s possible we did.
Well it’s a nice note, but seems like an email would have been easier and less costly.
We received it for both S24 and D26.
I don’t recall if D22 received it.
For some reason, I just saw this response to my earlier post. I’m not the most social media savvy. We do not live in Wake or Mecklenburg County, but a medium-sized western county in a city, not rural. Thank you for the tip about applying to the Assured KFBS pathway. He did check the box for that as well as the accelerated research. Ideally, he could do both and have a broader base. I did see that Applied Science Engineering major is not ABET accredited yet, so we need to research that a bit more. Looks like they plan on applying for accreditation, and I would think it a stretch for UNC not to receive it, but they give a vague timeline. I think the closer my kid gets to making a decision, the more he realizes he wants flexible options because he’s not 100 percent sure what he wants to do yet.
Not that your son would look at it (perhaps as a backup choice for UNC) but Purdue University Daniels School of Business has IBE, Integrated Business Engineering - which works primarily out of the B-school but takes some major STEM course through engineering. And even though he’d be OOS, there out of state tuition is likely to be around 32k or so (base plus add for business, and maybe engineering)
