Advice would be helpful

Here’s my situation. I am going to be a senior in highschool, I have a 3.6 unwieghted gpa and recieved a 24 on the act which i will be taking again because i was not satisfied. as for college i am unsure about it, i dont know if i can deal with another 4 years of school, and maybe even more if i went to grad school. also after the college selection which i am having trouble with i am also having trouble with selecting a major, i am good at math and science but i dont really like them too much although i liked chemistry. I am terrible and writting and english. if i had to pick a major now it would either be computer science because i like computers, or political science because i enjoy politics. because of all this i am really considering joining the military, to be more specific SWCC in the navy.

any advice on schools or major or navy life would be appreciated.

Thank you

oh and by the end of this year i will have taken four years of german 2 of them being college courses, A’s in every year and i love it

and 4 years of varsity hockey and 4 years of varsity lacrosse, 3 year captain of lacrose and 2 year captain of hockey

Why not major in German? Or International Relations, or something that would require you to learn multiple foreign languages? Or join the Navy, and try to get into a program where you’ll learn a lot of foreign languages (rather than just German). Having that kind of skill set would be pretty invaluable. Or join the Navy, serve your time, figure out a bit what you like and what you don’t, then use the GI bill to get paid to go to school. That’s what my Granddad did, and he didn’t regret a thing. My cousin spent a year in college, finding out he didn’t enjoy school, then went into the Navy and is now really enjoying his work (though he can’t talk much about what it is). Pretty much no choice you make will be a “bad” choice, unless you hate what you’re doing (i.e. don’t go to school if you really can’t stand it. Though college is waaaay different from high school).

Pop on over to the Parents Forum, and run a search on Gap Year options. Not college, not military service (yet), but decent chances to think about what you want to do with your life.

Since you like German, one gap year option you should consider would be a student exchange program to Germany, Austria, or Switzerland. Even though you would be “in school” the environment would be very different from what you are used to, and you would have a good opportunity to observe different political cultures during your time abroad. Look up [AFS Intercultural Programs](http://www.afs.org) and [Youth For Understanding](http://www.yfu.org) to see what they offer.
