Advice?

Hi everybody!

I’m only fifteen years old, but I don’t think it’s ever too early to start considering which college to attend. I’ve been discussing this topic with a number people and find myself still confused.

I’m going to give you all a sort of overview on my situation and hope you will all give me some advice.

First of all, I’m a very muti-cultural person. My father is from New York, born and raised, my mother from Buenos Aires, born and raised. And since my father joined the military, I was born in the states but was raised in Spain, so I’ve seen a number of cultures. I don’t know how any of this will influence my college decision, but I was wondering what scholarships there were in connection to my background.

Second of all, I have some idea of what I’d like to study. I’m aware my likes and what professions I’m leaning toward will most likely change in the next couple of years, but for now, I’m interested in seeing my possibilities in these particular fields. I’m a video editor on YouTube. As in, I edit videos from TV shows and post them on YouTube. So, my interests lie greatly in cinematography. I have some experience directing, writing screenplays and editing videos. I would love to have a career as an executive producer or as a director. I have a couple concerns on this particular field. First of all, I discussed this with my dad who mentioned that the profession might have lost a lot of its power due to the impact the internet has had on cinematography. I was wondering how accurate this statement was and how the cinematography career will be in, say, 2020 which would be during my time of working. I was thinking of doing a double major in cinematography and economics since this would allow me to study what I most enjoy, in company with a strong back-up plan since economics could open into a number of careers. I love writing, and have been told I’m quite good at it. I love analyzing things and planning things and managing things. I also have a broad knowledge of computers and the internet. With this in mind, what other majors would you recommend studying? I would like to look into some careers that include similar things to cinematography and the internet, as well as management.

In addition, I was curious as to which universities you would recommend considering my situation and my interests. I welcome any advice you have on this entire subject. I’m sorry I’m not clearer on what I’m interested in, but I’m hoping this website will help me figure it out. Thank you so much.

Hi,
My son is also 15 years old and has been filming for 5 years now! He has many videos on youtube as well. Last summer he was lucky to have been on set (just observing as you can’t touch anything unless you are in the union) during the filming of a pretty big movie that was being filmed in our small city in New England. All I can say was that I was amazed at how many individuals comprise a movie! So yes, having a back up plan is a good idea but I’m sure there will always be a need for cinematographers.

My son will be attending the Emerson College film camp this summer. He is interested in Chapman University, USC (of course), UNC school of the arts and a few others. He has a few years but all of the schools are very selective so make sure to keep your GPA at least at a 3.0 or higher.
