All my years of schooling I’ve always been top of my classes. Kept my grades up. ALl this ended when I hit High School. My freshman year is messed up. Ridden with absenses and failing marks I dont think it can be fixed. Now I’m a sophmore an still have high hopes for college. I just wanted to know if anyone can give me some advice on what things I should strive forto beef up my record.

Your hopes for college are not ended, but you definitely need to make a big change in your grades starting now. Some colleges do not count freshmen grades. Princeton is one of them (though it will look at your class rank, which is determined in part by freshmen grades).

Many other colleges will be very impressed by a very strong upward trend. They know that some students are immature and don’t catch fire until soph or junior year. This does not, however, mean that you can continue to slide now while assuming all will be fine. Because of your weak frosh year, you probably will have a more difficult time getting top grades this year than you would have if you had had a strong frosh year. There are things that you didn’t learn last year that would have helped you this year.

Anyway, my advice is to strive for all As and Bs this year. If you get some Cs, that will not be fatal, but do try to bring your grades up each semester. Next year and senior year, you do want to have all As and Bs. Keep in mind, too, that you can’t afford to get seniorities. When colleges see your freshman year grades, they’ll look very closely at your senior year ones to make sure that you have become committed to getting good grades in school. Weak senior grades could make them think that your freshman year was more your norm.

You also might benefit from getting tutoring in organizational skills. Since h.s. requires more independence from students in terms of doing their assignments, weak organizational skills can cause lots of problems.

Make sure, too, to talk to your teachers so that they know you are serious. You may have gotten a reputation as being lazy, and you need to erase that this year. Make sure that your actions match your words: Don’t BS them. Ask for advice and follow their advice. If your grades aren’t good on tests or assignments, talk to the teachers so as to find ways of improving next time.
