Advisor from a Different Department?

Recently, one of the professors I have been working with has expressed a strong interest in being my advisor for graduate school. Of course, I am thrilled by this idea. We work well together and are currently involved in multiple projects that I am very interested in.

I am not sure how this would work logistically though. The professor currently advises students in Psychology graduate programs, but is technically a professor of Psychiatry. I am looking at applying to two different Psychology programs this Fall (hoping to begin my studies in Fall 2010). **Do I need to find an adviser in that department too? ** In my application, I plan to describe the research I am already involved with, but am unsure if they would be put-off by me preferring to work with somebody from outside their department.
I do, of course, plan on completing coursework in the department (if I am admitted) and would be conducting psychological research.

Thanks in advance for any advice you all may have.
