Aeolus International Competition for Wind Instruments

Does anyone have any information on the Aeolus International Competition for Wind Instruments? DS has been accepted to compete and I woiuld LOVE some info about this.

The Aeolus competition in Dusseldorf? My boyfriend competed there last year, is there anything in particular you’d like to know?

From what I remember, (I was in Russia at the time, and only arrived in Dusseldorf after the 2nd round), there was a big candidate cut out after the first round, from 40-something to 12. I believe it was then 3 for the final, and they didn’t have to be one from each instrument represented, just the 3 best overall. Final with orchestra, as you probably know.

It’s a good competition, good luck to your son!

I was wondering about hotels, local travel…how much of this was actually conducted in German (acceptance letter was in German with an English translation). DS will likely be going on his own and I would love to know how accessible Dusseldorf is to the competition venue, etc.

Thanks for any info…

Hello,
I don’t know anything about the competition but I’m from Germany and I live next to Düsseldorf so if you want to know anything about the city you can ask me if you like. Most of the people speak English over here so I don’t think your son will have any problem considering language. Hotels usually have German and English (and sometimes French) signs.

Dusseldorf is lovely. The competition is held quite close to the city centre which was filled with quaint hotels and restaurants and very safe. I speak a little German, but my boyfriend speaks none at all and he seemed to manage the arrival and first two rounds of the competition without any problems.

The trains in Germany and within Dusseldorf are great, have English translations everywhere and run in a typically orderly German fashion  He could fly into any German city and get the train to Dusseldorf easily.

In terms of motherly concerns, this competition would be perfect :)

If you have any other questions let me know and I’ll try to help.
