does anyone have experience with AEWs? What are they like? And are there normal grades for these workshops like other classes?

They’re pretty much enrichment sessions with two undergrad facilitators. Essentially the facilitators first go over concepts taught in class and then give some challenging prelim-like problems for you to work on in groups and bounce ideas off each other. They stress group work quite heavily so if you’re the kind of person who likes working alone, you should probably go to one of the ELI one to one tutoring sessions instead of an AEW. Grades are given pass/fail and based on attendance (you can only miss 3 sessions).

Are they intended for students strong in the class, or struggling in the class?

Both - they try to guide it for people who are strong and who are struggling. If you end up really struggling though, I would recommend going to office hours as well since although the AEWs are capped at 10-15 students for two facilitators, the facilitators try to refrain from helping you unless your group is completely off in the thought process. They’re also obviously not professors or TAs so they may not be able to explain material as well as the profs or TAs can.

i took an AEW and found it quite helpful. The questions were challenging and the facilitators were good and offered their time outside of class for review sessions for tests. It was really just good to get practice in test like problems (since the test questions were nothing like HW questions) and have worked out solutions to these problems to refer to later.
