Affiliate/Informal Post-Graduate Programs?

Are there any programs, fellowships, research/affiliate student positions, etc available to students after receiving their BA in literature, from another university, at Berkeley?

I know someone who would like to come to Berkeley for around a year, starting next fall, after graduating this coming summer with a BA in Literature from UCSC. He is graduating a year early and has not started any grad-school applications, and will probably wait a year to do so; applying for any sort of formal graduate program (awarding an MA/PhD) isn’t realistic for the next year, at least.

Does any sort of program along these lines exist?

I think the jump between medical school and a BA in literature may be a bit of a hurdle. I am looking more for a program that is relative to Lit.

I don’t know that there’s a “program,” per se – if there is, I haven’t seen it – but people are allowed to enroll in Berkeley classes on a space-available basis without being students registered at Berkeley proper.

It is very expensive ($425/unit – roughly $1700 per course), but it is a good way to take Berkeley literature courses; I know professors in the department are pretty flexible when they have room in their courses. It doesn’t say for sure whether it’s possible, but since undergraduates can often register for graduate courses with instructor permission, it might even be possible for your friend to do the same.
