affirmative action

after reading many posts I remain confused. Does UM give advantage to hispanics, blacks etc. or not? Also, does it count against you if your not a US citizen in the admissions process?

It would depend as far as the citizen thing goes. If you are an international student, you would be considered with the OOS pool.

As far as the AA thing goes, this year will be the first year Michigan DOES NOT use AA in the admissions process. However, IMO they are still trying to do everything possible to get around that, so who really knows what will go on. They are using a new computerized geography thing to help figure out under-represented areas and high schools, so that may still be considered along the lines of AA, but will be less race related than region related. Not sure if that helps or not, but no, they aren’t officially allowed to use AA anymore.

Nope. Affirmative action no longer exists at Michigan because of the passing of Proposal 2 last fall.

However, it will be more difficult for an international student to be accepted. Michigan is going to give preference to Americans. It’s like the difference between being an in–state and an out-of-state student. There are more spots up for grabs for in-staters.
