Affording UIUC without selling my liver and left testicle on the black market

UIUC has it on their financial aid page that OOS students can expect to pay 43-48k, excluding travel. The high end of the scale is supposedly for engineering students like me.

So I guess I would be looking at almost 50k a year. I think some ivies/stanford cost less than that nowadays with their substantial financial aid packages.

I read that not living in the dorms will save you a good amount of money. By my calculations this works out to be about 6k a year. Is this right?

I also read that CS majors have no trouble finding a summer job. The pay seems to range from 10-15k over the summer. How true is this? I have substantial experience in commercial programming.

I suppose that if I work every summer and live off campus UIUC would only be about 20-30k shy of an in-state education for me.

Any tips from current students on how to afford an education here OOS?

As a freshman and possibly as a sophomore, you will find it difficult to find a technical summer job despite the fact that UIUC is a popular place for major companies such as Microsoft, Google, and Facebook to recruit CS students. As a freshman last year, I got paid 4.5k and this year, I will get paid 5k for my internship. I would not count on getting 10-15k each summer, despite the fact that some people may get paid that much.

However, you said that you have experience with commercial programming, which may help you.
