"Afluenza" Defense

Did the dad ever show up in court on that Friday.

This makes me madder the second time around. Didn’t know that was possible. What horrible people.

It appears as though the FBI is now involved.

Why on earth did he even have his passport?

Was a beer pong game worth going on the run?! How stupid can they be?! I hope the authorities will find this piece of scum and throw him in jail.

“Was a beer pong game worth going on the run?!”

Well, you know, a really good game of beer pong just might be worth it…

Actually, this might be a great twist to this case. He surely should have gone to jail, it’s likely they will catch him, and throw his pampered butt in jail like he should have been, after killing all those people. Karma, it’s a …

Edit, to add, I’m not sure he killed people (I read four), but then I read that he seriously injured them. However, my post would remain the same.

Four people died as a result of his drunk driving and a fifth is now paraplegic and his family is poor.

I’ve seen a current picture of the now 18 Ethan and he looks the same except he added a beard attempt. He’ll probably have his probation revoked and have to serve at least some of the ten years in an adult jail or (better yet) prison. They could not prove from a video that he was drinking but disappearing from his probation officer breaks his deal.

I can’t understand why convicted people can’t have their passports suspended until the probation is over. It seems to be quite an oversight by the court.

Sweet Karma.

Here’s a pretty good summary of the crime with pictures. I’ve never heard of the magazine:

Osprey, that article was helpful. Driving “under the influence” was. Toning new to this young man.

@OspreyCV22, D Magazine is a pretty popular magazine which covers local events/news/culture/real estate/business/restaurants/entertainment, etc. of anything to do with the DFW area, and to a lesser extent, general Texas issues.

I actually bought that particular issue. The front page caption was huge, “The Worst Parents Ever.”

Hope Mom and son are caught and thrown in jail.

The psychologist who coined “Affluenza” and helped him defend should sanctioned by APA.

If it helps at all, he wished he could take it back, and suggests the correct term is “spoiled brat” http://www.cnn.com/2013/12/12/justice/texas-teen-dwi-wreck/. If the psychologist is not a member of APA, there is nothing APA can do.

I hope the families of those who were killed filed a civil suit. The kid who is paralyzed unfortunately shoulders blame because he chose to get in the bed of a pickup truck with a drunk driving.

@partyof5, I believe all lawsuits have been filed and settled out of court. I think I read something to that effect recently from local news, but I don’t remember the source.

Are his parents married?

@partyof5, they divorced in 2007.

Okay I was wondering if he truly was in the dark about their disappearance. This story is so crazy. I hope he and his mother spend some time in jail.

Stupid upon stupid upon stupid. The “Affluenza” defense was about as stupid and offensive as it could be. I was disgusted then. Wasn’t really surprised to see the beer pong video clip and tweets - but that was also stupid. Violate probation, pay the crime. Oh - and since he’s 18, it can be remanded to adult court. But then running away? Possibly leaving the US?!?!?

I travel internationally many times per year, and have Global Entry, the service that lets me bypass immigration lines when I return to the US. They ask, both on the application and in the final interview, where I’ve traveled outside the US in the past 10 years, and where my next international trips might be. I joked with the CBP guy at the interview - “Don’t you have all of that information already?” He laughed and said yes.

So at least they know where he went, if he left the US. Once he was outside the borders, if he’s in Europe, he could be traveling among the countries without being tracked. But otherwise, or if he leaves there, that’s tracked.

It’s a matter of time. The longer he’s on the run, the worse it’ll be. And I can’t say I feel the slightest bit sorry for him. “Affluenza” won’t save his sorry *** now.

I suspect he has a fake passport, as does his mom.

Wow, had not thought of that. Could be. I was wondering why they could not immediately determine where their passports had ben used.
