"Afluenza" Defense

Dad will use the affluenza defense as well . . . what? I can’t be a police office because I bought a badge?

That is just bizarre.

I’m going to file this under “stuff (pretty much) only white people can do without fear of getting shot”

Ironically, the first thing I saw after clicking the link was a story about a cop shooting a white guy in Oklahoma. People on another thread were wondering if this happens. Apparently it does.

Link, Flossy? I can’t find anything on that.

ETA – I don’t recall anyone ever saying the police don’t shoot white people too. The questions are about disparities, about circumstances, and about consequences for the officer. So I think a link would be very helpful.

Off-duty Oklahoma cop charged with first degree murder for shooting daughter’s white boyfriend:
<a href=“HuffPost - Breaking News, U.S. and World News | HuffPost”>HuffPost - Breaking News, U.S. and World News | HuffPost;

Which is totally the same as on-duty cop shooting unarmed black kid, except for being completely different.

I saw that one too, Fang, but I didn’t think Flossy could possibly be equating that to another recent officer shooting. I can’t help but notice another glaring difference in addition to the ones you mentioned: the OK officer has been charged.

I was the person on the other thread, I posed the question how many black officers kill unarmed white suspects? Not white cops/white suspects.

Well, I agree it’s totally different. I don’t know it why it’s any better or worse, though. Each case is different which is why the specific surrounding circumstances are so important.

If the two cases are totally different, I’m not clear why you brought it up. But I’ll answer your question:The other shooting is worse because it’s been two weeks and it is by no means certain that the officer will ever have to answer for what he did.

LasMa, I brought it up because of the silly post preceding my bringing it up. It was a response. FYI - The grand jury is investigating. New facts are emerging, daily. And, nothing is expected to happen until October.

Exactly. Nothing is expected to happen until at least two months after the shooting. How long did it take them to arrest the murderer in OK?

BTW, there is absolutely no requirement that the prosecutor has to go the grand jury route. He could just as well do a preliminary hearing, which would not only be a lot faster, but would be completely transparent. Instead he is choosing to slow-walk this matter, in secrecy.

It looks like it took 2 weeks, but I don’t think there was a grand jury proceeding involved. They only work on Wednesdays. And, as as you said the two cases have nothing much in common, anyway. One was a murder case, one is a possible excessive use of force case tainted by local and national politics. They are different. I agree the prosecutor is passing the buck because he doesn’t want to be the bad guy if it turns out the evidence clears the cop. That’s part of the politics part. Also,it doesn’t help that his dad was a police officer killed in the line of duty by a black man. Bias charges are inevitable. We are derailing this thread. I’m going back to work.

Sorry to bump, but unsurprisingly… affluenza boy caught violating his parole:

I’m still disgusted over a year later.

Let’s hope some semblance of justice prevails and he finally goes to jail.

That would be so awesome if he was found to be in violation of his probation.

Apparently Ethan Couch did not check in with his probation officer, and he and his mother cannot be located. I wonder if we have yet another example of his parents protecting him from the consequences of his behavior.

Wow! Goes to the stupidity of this family. He rcvd such a sweetheart deal - and now he has blown it. Good. Throw all three of them in jail.

I just saw the news and I have to say, what a fine upstanding family!

Concerns he has left the country.
