This year, no departure from a tradition of large numbers of graduating Carls pursuing 2 year adventures. 21 seniors will be packing their bags for overseas commitments, the largest number per capita of any LAC or university in the US, joining the Peace Corps.

Smaller in number but no less intent on leaving their mark on the world - two Watson Fellows will be joining them in far-flung lands. From the Watson Fellowship website:

Grace Ogilby, Carleton College
Breaking the Silence: An Exploration in Women’s Oratory and Activism
South Africa, India, Liberia, Nicaragua

With one of her first words as “no!” Grace was well on her way to debating by the age of one. Since then, she has used her love of public speaking on forensics and mock trial teams, and as a student Senator, a Resident Assistant, and the President of her Rugby team at Carleton College. A Political Science Major, she has worked at the Carter Center in Atlanta, GA and her Congressman’s Office to understand how politics can make the world a safer, more inclusive, and more peaceful place.

Niki Tomita, Carleton College
Following the Torch: Around the World with Special Olympics
Namibia, Thailand, Morocco, Ecuador

*Lucky enough to have a brother with Down syndrome, Niki focuses on Eric’s abilities, rather than disabilities, which are particularly obvious through sports. This led her to volunteer with Special Olympics for most of her life; she has coached Northfield’s S.O. basketball team for four years. Named the MIAC 2010 Soccer Player of the Year, Niki co-captains her varsity soccer and club Frisbee teams. She volunteered in Nicaragua with Amigos de las Americas, lived in Japan for two summers, and speaks Spanish, French, some Arabic and ASL. *

The adventure continues. Congratulations to all.
