After graduation question

I’m accepted to Michigan, but I also love Beloit College in Wisconsin and am hoping for a scholarship at Beloit.

Just wondering, how much of a difference to grad schools/employers in Michigan vs. Beloit (or a similar school) Is it a big or small difference?

Thanks!

anyone? :(

are you kidding me?
i live in milwaukee and beloit compared to michigan is like hickville vs. new york

michigan. k? kthx bye.

Yep, Michigan is much more prestigious, if that matters to you…

Michigan-----it’s unanimous.

I’m pretty sure that recruiters from all over the United States flood Ann Arbor every year in search of people to hire on campus for various jobs. A friend of mine was hired last year by General Mills a few months before graduation and he now makes a six-figure salary in Columbus. He tells me things like this happen at UMich often.

I’ve never heard of Beloit though.

However, I’ve heard that when it comes to recruitment, Michigan is in the top 20 in the country.

rence, i’m not talking about their respective locations

im talking about how differently they are viewed by employers/grad schools

Like I said. UM is one of the most highly regarded schools in the country when it comes to employment. Ask Alexandre, he knows a lot about this.

uwb, im aware, i mentioned location because its relevant to why im familiar with beloit as a reputable (not) college

USNews ranks Beloit #61 of the liberal arts college… fairly mediocre. Your job prospects will certainly be better at UM.

I hear that some employers don’t even know the names of even the top LACs

rence you are really mature and cool

uwbball, there isn’t a lot of data on placement rates into graduate programs and corporations. The little that there is would suggest that Michigan’s placement rate into graduate programs and companies is significantly better than Beloit’s.

For example, there are currently 400 or so Michigan alums enrolled at the 14 best Law schools in the nation (130 or so/year). There aren’t more than a handful of Beloit students enrolled at those Law schools. I know there are currently 0 (zero) Beloit grads enrolled at Harvard, Yale and Chicago Law Schools. Michigan has 50 or so grads currently enrolled at those three Law schools. Unfortunately, most graduate programs do not release details on the makeup of their student bodies, so it is not really possible to see the whole picture.

In terms of corporate recruiting, all major companies, from the mega-exclusive private equity firms and management consulting firms to the major players in the maket like GE, Microsoft, Boeing etc… recruit heavily at Michigan. I don’t think, although I have no evidence of this, that those comapnies recruit at Beloit.

Again, I must stress that the picture is not close to being complete, but the little evidence there is points to Michigan being a far more effective university where graduate school and professional placement are concerned.

However, if you prefer Beloit to Michigan and if Beloit is much cheaper to attend, I would definitely urge you to go to Beloit, assuming you gave Michigan a fair shot too.

It seems almost wrong to even try to compare these two schools. They are so completely different.

Regardless, if you enjoy the small school environment an LAC provides, go with Beloit. If you want top academics, amazing name recognition, big sports, and an awesome social life, come to Mich for sure.

Thanks everyone, I definitely like both, Beloit may end up being signficantly cheaper but I’ll find all of that stuff out on April 1st. I know they’re basically like polar oppisites but I think I would do well and be happy at both.

Anyways, thanks for the responses!
