After the launch

I should start charging commission, or what’s that, process fee?
welcome madbean, not maddenmd (is this now spelled right?)
I bet I am the only one with username dyslexia but warning you, there is another poster named maddenmd equally mild well mannered and kid in same area of study-sh.

Florence! Medici! uffizi! food!
what art to study? grinding powder portion for colors? is Italian pre req.?
would I ever get to go?

have you followed “squee” from last year? I tried keep it float but died natural death.

other than that, let’s play!!

^fammom
I would spy but that’s me.
don’t.
but tell me what he said in the letter.

switters, redbug. either one should call in “Car talk” NPR. wanna know what those brothers have to say.

welcome madbean…so nice to have different input on other odd cultures…like what does a game design kid do in Italy for art study abroad? I am dying to know as my techie son just started in art at Carnegie Mellon and does a lot of animation. Even better if he finds acceptable program through other state university we pay LOWER tuition…yay! I told him to find the perfect program, hopefully offered by a university in virginia and voil’a cut tuition by 1/4 for a semester.

We had a talk this break and I told him to listen to the sophomores organizing for their study abroad to get good ideas…our criteria apart from break on tuition…preferably spanish speaking country …mandatory is that it has to be someplace we really want to visit…actually I have very crafty plan…send kids to study abroad in country we want to retire to…Argentina/Buenos Aires YES! …stockholm NOOOO! I want to go somewhere where people DANCE and drink good wine! then…son falls in love (21 or 22 is a good age for this) and moves there after graduation…a few years later, grandchildren and our retirement…what could be more natural than doting grandma to apply well sharpened helicopter skills to the next generation?

Italy has the wine if not the dancing so please tell us more about the study abroad program for game design majors?!

BandD so far I have resisted the temptation. D is at a late gymnastics meet…temptation is downstairs…I will be strong, I will be strong…in 1980 my brother wrote me a letter when I started college that warned me not to be fooled by frat boys who offered cappuccinos in their rooms or to go see their cool fish tanks…I thought he was joking but got to Duke and sure enough first party some drunk guy with greek letters on his shirt told me about the cool espresso machine in his suite…I asked my brother how he knew…well, he said, remember I took Mum’s electric grill to school? He seduced young women with the munchies with his offers of pancakes at midnight! Will my son’s letter reflect a debauched lifestyle? what does he feel he has to warn little sis about? better not to know…maybe

Gmom
when are you going?
check it out!!

famm: Like your story a lot. I can imagine after your S left, you will feel empty in your heart! D will be gone next Monday, so I have several days to be with her. Time fly!

switters: I asked D and she didn’t know her school report either.

madbean: welcome! you are a head of most of us since your S1 is already a junior in art school. It is cool he can study in Florence for a semester! Wish your S2 get the offer he dreams on. My D is a freshman in Cooper Union. I enjoyed read the posters here. I learned a lot from this forum :–)

Bears: It is nice of you to introduce new people here!

Share a funny story so that all of you can laugh at me! Today, when I was ready to go to work, I could not find my purse. I though I lost it somewhere yesterday, so I emailed my boss to let her know I need to work from home so that I could go to all the stores when they open. I drove to all the stores in a big snow looking for my purse, but didn’t find it. On my way back I started planning to call all credit card company to report …
After I got home, searched everywhere again and finally found it in the garage! I realized I did try to find a box in the garage after I got home yesterday and thanks God that slip of memory finally got back and save me from all the boring calling …

OK Loveblue, one day a week or so ago, I was about to go out but I couldn’t find my car keys. I had this problem in the past so I always put my keys on a little hook right by the front door. Well, some days they end up in my coat pocket, or even in my purse, or even hung on the coat rack with my coat and purse, but this day they weren’t in any of those places. After 5 minutes I found them - IN MY HAND!!! I can’t even remember which hand it was either, so no blaming “handedness”. Utterly ridiculous!

When I was very young once my sister and I were with our grandmother, waiting to go out with her. She had to find her glasses first. We looked all around and I was very proud of myself when I found them for her. They were around her neck on a chain! Clearly, we’re related.

fammom - I can relate to that sadness! D2 (mica) is still home, but we took D1 back to school last night. It’s all of the “going away” with none of the excitement of that August launch. Cold, dreary weather doesn’t help either. I know they’ll both be fine as soon as classes get rolling, but we had such a great winter break together, just as a family, that it feels sad. D3 cried and cried and she still has one sister home!

D2 (mica) would also like to do a semester abroad and is looking at options. It would be nice to pay less for a non-MICA option. I’ve told her though that I would prefer her to do spring away rather than fall. If she were away for the fall, she would miss both Halloween and Thanksgiving as well as her birthday. For spring, she would only miss Easter which isn’t as big of a deal for us. Also, so many airports were closed in mid December in Europe and it would be terrible to be stuck there. They’re not so likely to be closed in May (unless that volcano erupts again).

greenwitch- you beat me to the car key story, I was going to tell the same one.

Thanks so much to all generous souls here for the kind welcome.

FAMM–so cool that your S is at CMU! S1 also loved CMU and got in for fine art. S2 is also applying–so wish us luck! S1 had his eye on the game design major at USC and he had windfall luck with merit awards there.

S1 is very gung-ho on game design and always has been and really has loved college since he’s met a lot of amazing designers to work with. In fact, it’s been a little hard to tear himself away but this travel adventure has been part of his plans (and part of my dreams for him) and here it suddenly is! He is not studying game stuff in Europe, however. He was also very involved in art in HS and hasn’t had time to pursue it. But he was lucky to have many AP credits when he started college and instead of graduating early (more about that below), or taking a minor, I encouraged him to do study abroad. He was originally going to take Japanese language and do a study abroad there, but changed plans and took Italian instead so he could study art in Florence. Those college Italian courses have been hard! However, to graduate at his university he needs to take 3 semesters of a language anyway.

As for $$, his school offers study abroad to Florence through Syracuse U. The cost of Syracuse is only slightly less than USC (private–University of Southern California) so while we are loving everything we hear about the program–it is not an inexpensive alternative. :frowning: OTOH, S1 is the very lucky recipient of a merit scholarship to USC that covers tuition for 4 years (oh Hallelujah!! And Frabjous day!) and it also covers any Study Abroad tuition. We, of course, pay for his flights, housing, special insurance, books, all expenses, fees, etc!!! They add up. But still–this scholarship has been heaven.

For Syracuse, he had to submit an art portfolio to be accepted into their Studio Art Program and I wondered how it would turn out. (He used his AP Studio Art-2D Design portfolio from 2 years ago). Luckily, he was approved. So now he’s in Florence!! (My H couldn’t stand it and called the hotel in Florence–sleepy S1 answered phone–5pm here is 2 am there) Tomorrow he’ll sign up for classes. He must take Italian 3 (boo. hiss) but also a cool class in Italian culture (think they go to restaurants and learn to cook–while speaking Italian?). He is planning on taking some divine Art History, of course. Also interested in an architecture course where they take them all over Italy. And as for studio courses, he wants painting. I think they will teach him to mix his own pigments. Who knows? I wish I could be taking all these classes and eating all this pasta! Instead, I’m paying all these bills. LOL.

Their program allows art students to live in apartments (they arrange for them) or do home-stays. Many in the studio art program take the apartments which are located pretty close to the studios. S1 is thinking he’d rather live with a family. The “mothers” are all master cooks and provide breakfast and dinner each day. He has his priorities! :)

Thanks again for letting me blather on. I am excited for S1–but miss him already.

Syracuse!! I was wondering about that because Syracuse introduced first semester study abroad in Florence few years back (?) and I thought,
hey! maybe I can pull it off somehow, I can just about afford that much (one semester only) anyway.
I think the program is well established. one of my kid’s art teacher did when she was a student, what, 12-15 years ago. she then worked there to stay longer. went back to visit many times.
now now free tuition for 4 years? how that can be possible?
these people with brain/tallent/dicipline/personarity should give up at least one of them and make room for those less fortunate- ahem be nice be nice

Ah we must all be related. A few years back I was in a panic, couldn’t find my glasses, then remembered I’d be around the corner to the local pizza store, ran back, raced up to the counter and breathlessly asked the counterman “Did I leave some glasses in here?” and he pointed to the pair that were hanging from the vee in my sweater and asked “Do they look sort of like those?”

Of course then there was that moment just a few weeks ago when I was talking to my husband from a nearby large city and started frantically searching my bag and said “I’ll have to call you back later, I need to run back to the museum, I can’t find my cell phone.” Which of course was the instrument I was just then talking on. Duh…

@Bears: D1 and I checked out the link to the Hong Kong show – we will definitely try to make it there! D1 is a ‘hot topic’ kind of girl – one of her Xmas gift requests was a book “Juxtaposz - The Dark Arts” or something like that. Very weird.

I am currently in the office-- but I got here without my parking tag or my ID badge this morning – they’re both in the other car which was left home for D1 to use. She has driven herself somewhere exactly ONCE since she got her license. But she is supposed to go to an appointment today at 2pm and she agreed to drive herself there - so we’ll see. In the meantime I’ve been cursing my bad memory (I just have too many other things on my mind??) for forgetting the parking tag and ID badge. Actually this is the second time in a week that I haven’t had my ID badge. When I came back to work after the holiday break I couldn’t find it anywhere. I even offered the kids a reward. I finally broke down and went to HR department to get a new badge. D1 found the original badge in the luggage – I must have inadvertently taken it with me to California.

Don’t be too hard on yourself, you have had a few “things” going on lately.

artsmarts - I love that pizza story, you must have made that guy’s day!

madbean - thanks for all the study abroad info, it’s very useful. I wonder how the kids get all their art back over here though. What do you do with paintings? Sounds like a cooking class is the way to go.

Gmom - is that book related to the magazine Juxtaposz? My D2 loves that magazine and asks for a gift subscription every year.

fammom - if I were you, I wouldn’t let my kids know about that retirement in Argentina fantasy. Maybe your son isn’t as contrary as some others, but I would hate for him to hear about it and then fall in love with some Scandinavian exchange student and end up in Lappland! If so, I have 3 nieces in Sweden he might like to meet…

Victoria’s secret girls! or girl with dragon tattoo that kicked hornet’s nest!
CC in-laws !!
let 'em get cross pollinated so we all become grandmas and eat Turkey and spiral ham together!!

no no no- I told S he had to find a nice engineer, just like his father did. No cross pollinating artists, someone needs to make a living, and remember where stuff is, and to feed the cat and so on…

Love that girl with the dragon tatoo that kicked the hornet’s nest, forget those fluffy Victoria’s Secret cloudpuffs, let’s hear it for the dark grim marvelously strong Viking women!

Although now that I ponder it, having a girl with a dragon tatoo that kicked the hornet’s nest for a daughter or daughter in law could prove to be a bit of a rocky road…and still I think I’d prefe Bear’s first option.

Woops on the last line.

…and still I think I’d prefer the dragon body art and attitude to Bear’s first option.
