After the launch

^^ not sure. They may hold some aside. You should call and ask.

Actually, D has a roommate who is a transfer student so they may be included with the freshmen.

Thanks greenwitch, i was just being all panicky. I talked to the transfer coordinator today, and she said that transfers can always get on campus housing if they want. :)

D Called and this is the first time she told me life is so stressful. She has two “five pages” paper and one “ten pages” paper and three projects need to work on.

Nothing i can do for her. I told her just get them done and don’t care that much about the quality. She said she have to give up the quality and everyone is super busy and stressful.

She is running out of her energy and looking forward “SUMMER VACATION”. She told me:“mom, 5 more weeks, then I am done this year”.

How is everyone else?

Hi Love-

either my S got easier humanities teachers, or Im just not hearing about papers. I know there is a huge amount of project work.

In other news, he found somewhere to live next year, and will be living with his roommate from this year (Yay!!! world’s nicest kid) and someone I havent met, but who is a friend of a friend. They are moving in soon, and planning on staying in NYC over the summer. My kid will maybe float back and forth between here and there, depending on what work he finds in the city. Anyone in the Manhattan/Brooklyn area who wants to hire a kid who will pretty much do anything, but happens to be a championship babysitter, with recommendations available pm me. I think as soon as the last 5 week crunch ends, he will hit the pavement looking for work.

Definitely crunch time according to my S. He sounds totally fried. He says that he tried to get away from animation (did a lot in HS) but somehow is doing a major animation project that he thinks will satisfy at least two classes…I told him to make sure they allow overlap. The comp sci teachers seem to love it they do a project that is related to another course…that is the point…programs that actually do something not just programming for programming’s sake. Art teachers may be less accepting if it doesn’t exactly “fit” their requirements…S was famous in HS and apparently now in college for taking on massive projects that don’t always work out. I hope this is a successful one. He is struggling in his 2D class…he isn’t sure why. Art history seemed to be doomed in February but he aced the midterm despite a lot of pessimissm. He said he was saved by his trip to Europe this summer…every slide that came up in the midterm was of something he had seen in Rome, Paris or Madrid …it was a bit eerie he said but he is particularly thankful to his old friend from 1st grade/Ecuador who hosted him in Rome…

I sent a fedex box full of junk food since we will be abroad for Easter week and a little more. It is the first time we have gone on family trip without him…rather sad. D says really hard to go to Ecuador without her brother …just weird not to be able to have him around at the family gatherings (he can help identify the more distant relatives that she can’t remember) and then the interminable greetings and goodbyes…yes, kiss the cheek of every old lady…creepy distant uncles…cousins…just doing the rounds when you get to a party can take 45 minutes…think long receiving line all around the living room and then every person who arrives after you also comes to cheek brush/kiss and chat and ask the same questions…tough to do without sibling support.

So…what did I send in the survival care package? Snack foods (ramen, popcorn, nuts, girl scout cookies), english toffees, gummievites, toothpaste, freeze dried mango, kleenex, two cheap DVDs from Target including the 1992 Dracula movie…i don’t even remember the other one. Put in cute Easter card with small amount of $$. It is a test to see if he opens the card.

I am trying to avoid working…crunch time before travel…

Am visiting MCAD this weekend to attend Parent Swap Day. D is trying to get all her stuff done so that she has some free time on Sunday (Saturday is all about the parents classes except lunch with the student). Told her she needed to do whatever she needed to do and don’t worry about me, I always have a book! Am sending Easter treat bags (12) for her friends, so that should be fun. Then go back up May 5 to move her stuff into storage.

fammom if you are still logged in, tell US-UK what her D should do, WashU or CMU

and tell glassblowing mom about Tyler’s facility in general?
http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/visual-arts-film-majors/1121300-tyler-school-art-glassblowing.html

love, cheer up.
few more days to big surprise for her. plan is cooked. will be baked and iced professionally.
shhhhhh

switters
tell him to get free parents paper from public library’s kids room, toy store etc. help wanted section should be in there. homework help/arts and crafts/big brother ball kicking would be a big plus. or you mean by baby-baby sitting that involve sh*it in diapers?
THAT is admiring for 19 year old boy.

for those crunched up, take it easy.
in somewhere Iowa, bold eagle parents are raising eaglets and there is this eagle cam you can follow 24/7.
The guy from Reptor resource project on the public radio said, how cute the babies are, soon to be ugly(!) teenager. bet he got one himself.
check out the eagle snacks and wait till 7.5 min into it, you get to see the babies.

it is the night right now, ^ of course.

Hopefully warm weather on the way will help these kids get through the home stretch.

We have a young friend who just visited home from speed skating training in Pittsburgh. Their intense training schedule is now through August in order to get ready for competition next fall. I feel for the kid. He has left high school for the dream of making it to the Olympics. He trains 5-6 hours a day and is doing online courses towards his GED. He lives in the home of one of the other athletes. They have it set up as a dorm for kids who come from around the country to train with a Korean coach. It seems the Koreans have secret training regimens to get these kids to the Olympics. This kid was keeping a blog but had to stop lest he reveal some of those secrets. One thing he did tell us was about the on sand training they do for hours on end. The coach stands there with arms folded, eyes hidden behind sunglasses, while the kids work out until they collapse.

My son was also home last week for Spring break. I guess RISD’s calendar is very different from most schools. He has seven weeks to go before the semester ends. He didn’t seem too stressed out and played Starcraft for most of the time. I think he was letting go in order to gear up for the rest of the year. He loves his philosophy class and told me how much he enjoys reading Heidegger!!???

We got to meet his roommate for next year and it seems like a good match, a very gentle guy with a good sense of humor. We decided to let him take his car up next year. One of the perks of ending up in that graduate housing is that parking is available for a very low price. This way he can get out to the beach and explore the area a bit more. At this point his life exists in a 10 block radius around RISD.

We are still hoping he gets the internship with the artist in Brooklyn for summer. The guy was out of town so he couldn’t meet with him during break. So he’ll have to come visit in couple of weeks to try again. If he does get it we are thinking about getting a sublet in Brooklyn. Our younger son was offered a job by his friend’s dad who runs a import business in Turkish foods in Brighton Beach. This way we can test out if my husband and I want to live in Brooklyn after our youngest finishes high school. We’ll see.

bears:
thanks! I am fine and I already tried to comfort D. I am sure she will be fine. I guess she must not organize well recently or this semester.
The link of the eagle is cool but it takes so long to see the tiny eaglets!
I didn’t tell D anything about the cake. It will be interesting if you stay there. You can have the Guard to take a picture of you and her.

FAMM:
CMU was a top choice for D last year and I did some search of that school. it is not a easy one. Plus your S learn Art and Computer Science. his load must be very heavy.

redbug:
It is nice MCAD give parents this kind of chance to get to know the school better, Enjoy, would like to know more after you get back from it!

Drae:
D is looking for a apartment to live for next year. she and her two roommate are searching a three room apartment, but haven’t found one they love. One of her roommate will stay in nyc and my D and another one will sublease their rooms. They either get one in Manhattan or Brooklyn, but most likely Brooklyn. She said she already found a girl to sublease her room but not sure if that is a done deal. If not I will ask her if it is fine to sublease her room to your S. I will find out more but her new apartment is still in the air. I know they are planning to look at some one in Brooklyn this weekend.

After this whole year stressful life, D want some relax time. she will be home the whole summer and I am happy to have her for three month! We will have a trip to Europe in May and another trip to China in June. I am very busy to plan the trip of Europe, but didn’t get much input from D. Just hoping she will like the itinerary I build.

Drae- I just got a call from my S who is also looking to sublet the room he is already paying rent on. He may have someone, but pm me if you are interested. Its in Brooklyn.

My D is also looking for an apartment in Baltimore. There’s a lot out there, but she may have to start soon and pay for the summer even if she’s not there. Even so, we will not be paying more than for a Mica single so that’s fine---- and my favorite part-----less moving of stuff home!!! Well, I shouldn’t count on that until it happens, but I can hope.

In other strange Mica news, it turns out that students can play on sports teams for OTHER local schools. D knows a few boys who were playing lacrosse for UMB (or maybe UB). Anyway, they didn’t like the team or coaches and switched to Hopkins. This started a small war between the schools but so far, Hopkins is winning. I guess UMB tried to pull a “non-compete clause” or something.

ooh…love blue, switters
I will talk to my son and get back to you.
Thanks.

drae mamabear
if the kid is as cute as younger Apolo Ohno few years back, you must let me know when he comes next time.
I digged him and had crush on his single dad ('s guts. not visual)
naturally I can not trust Korean coach to train American team (no offense Korean folks) from what they think of/done to Apolo.
Then again, if I am on Korean side, I would be saying total opposite.

apartment!! yes.
keep coming any info. I might have to put my kid in somewhere for June-Aug.

love
no way in my bear suits!
guard lady promised me to buz her in front of me. when that happens, I would go hiding, the guard will keep eye on the cake till she comes and get it.

Is today the big cake day?
Bears, take a picture of the cake!

oh…Apolo. I had a crush on him but then it seemed his smile got frozen on his face as he started dancing with the stars. The dad is interesting. Wasn’t he a hairdresser? This kid is super cute in a different way. Tall, blond, French/Jewish background. Not your average American kid. Plus, he plays beautiful cello. If he makes it he will get a lot of attention.
As for Korean coaches, he told me Russia has one too. So really they are all Korean teams with these guys battling it out for who can whip these kids into champions.

Is it secret enuff? it’s strawberries with whipped cream, whole round version of this.
I also mentioned somewhere in Cooper/food thread.
http://www.foodspotting.com/places/741-panya-bakery-new-york/items/914-strawberry-shortcake

wait, I never shown this to you, love? Is it good to you? we can change it if you want but have to hear from you sometime today.

…I guess I should PMed? nah, everyone loves seeing cakes, yes?

Yum! That looks really good, and I DO appreciate seeing cakes! I had a great, and rather bitter, piece of key lime pie last night that I attacked with my MIL. This strawberry loveliness looks perfect for a spring birthday.
