Aftermath of Boston bombing - Half truths and fantastic tales

I’ve also read that Tamerlan kept the baby while his wife worked. So, on the day of the bombing, his wife worked and he kept the baby? Did he have someone else watch the baby while he dropped off the bomb? Did he put her down for a nap and return home before she woke up?

What?!?!

This whole thing has been just bizarre from the get go.

D1 and I watched All the President’s Men a while back. We broke down in laughter at how the editor would never let them print anything without at least 2 credible confirmations. Those days sure are gone.

THere are a lot of things that make no sense here. So the mother skipped out on a $1600 shoplifting charge, left the country over it? Those parents have lost a son, have a son in the hospital seriously injured, facing the most terrible charges, just 19 years old, two daughters also here, and one of them still is not here? Something a little off here, IMO. In a case like this friends, family, someone would get a parent over here, not to mention that the FBI might want a chat with them and might give them funds to fly over here. It would cost a pittance of what was and will be put into this case.

And the situation with the baby makes no sense either, in that the two brothers were off at the Marathon that day and what about thereafter? Where was the baby? Who was watching her? I believe the widow has rights not to answer any questions but I’m surprised she is not taken in as a possible material witness and questioned, nonetheless for national security reasons. IF she invokes the 5th and her marital privileges, that’s one thing, but she has not even been questioned thoroughly yet. Maybe legal counsel has blocked it and advised her to stay mum. Her parents have the funds and wherewithal to protect her.

I know that the devastation that the young Tsarnaev has wrought and have horrified. At the same time, I am surprised as a mother of young adults several time over, that the parents seem to have just ditched him, He’s the age of our kids, for goodness sakes.

Was he married when he went to Dagestan for 6 months?
What excuse did he give to leave his wife for so long? When the baby was so young?
Where did they build the bombs? Anyone they were living with would surely have seen something suspicious?

The wife did retain counsel and they must be very careful with her. She could be charged with accessories and/or collaborators. I heard on Fox (may not be true) that the young brother said told the investigators that she called after the video was released and told them that to get ready and be careful. So she knew but did not report to the police if that is true. She could be in big trouble herself as this unfolds.

ttparent, thank you for the link to the interview with the carjack victim. That was interesting and explains a bit about the timeline and what was actually happening that night for the unexplained hours.

One story I read, I think in the NY Times, is that Tamarlane needed to go to Russia to keep his passport. He wasn’t a US citizen so he couldn’t get a US passport. I think the parents said this in their press conference yesterday.

Thanks for the link to the Globe story about the carjack victim. Very interesting. Smart guy.

Closed captioning is sometimes done by voice recognition software which explains obvious glitches and in this case, the alleged bomber’s name was perceived by the computer to be the same as a celebrity…

I am pretty sure that you can renew passport at any of the Russian embassy in the US. The rumour (and this is pure speculation) was that Tamerlan left for Russia because he killed the 3 drug dealers that he knew in Waltham and was worried about getting caught or being investigated for the crime.

The interesting part of the carjack event was that they already drove all the way west to Waltham and almost got to I-95 and drove all the way back to Cambridge, probably a good 20+ minutes drive just to get gas on Memorial Drive back to right very closed to MIT where they killed the cop. It makes no sense to me.

I had read that the wife and child were living at the parents home for the last year and that the father would come to the house on weekends to be with his daughter.

Of course… I read this in the news so who knows if it is accurate :)

The Russian embassy and consulates handle passport issues for all Russian citizens here in the US, so this explanation for his trip makes no sense.

Cross-posted with ttparent.

The article says that at one point the older brother was messing with the navigation system, so this does make sense. As my personal experience has shown, nav. systems in Boston can be pretty useless :)

As others have said, the passport excuse does not hold water. It also does not take 6 months to get the passport renewed. So his wife was living in that apartment while he was there and I guess she was paying the rent. Who was watching the baby then? A lot of the news does not make any sense at all to me, and i too, am more interested than usual in this story because it does not make sense. Usually there are not so many pieces that stick out as they do in this situation. That carjack story is truly something else. I doubt those guys would have been caught if the victim had had the GPS devises in his car.

It was Patriots’ Day, which I understand is a MA holiday, so maybe Katherine had the day off of work and was with the baby.

While I am not buying the passport buying excuse either, it does take a long time to get passport and other documents in Russia (speaking from first hand experience).

The wife stayed home while receiving welfare benefits. IMHO, the wife knew much more than what she is claiming to know.

Edited to add: The reason why he could only stay 6 month in Russia and not more was because if he stayed longer, his green card would have been revoked. And as others have already said, he could have renewed his passport while in US.

The best-sounding explanation for the Russia trip is avoiding the investigation of the triple murder, if the timing is right. If the murdered men were drug dealers, then it’s possible that Tamerlan was dealing drugs. This could explain how he supported himself. All speculation, of course.

I don’t understand how the wife fits in. I’ve read both that she lived in RI with her parents and the baby, and Tamerlan came on weekends, and that she lived in the Cambridge apartment with the brothers. Both of these cannot be true. The apartment was squalid, it’s hard to believe that she would live in those conditions with her baby.

I will really be shocked if she knew that the brothers were responsible for the bombing and warned them that they had become suspects.

And I really don’t understand the brothers’ parents.

If he was a Russian citizen, by going back to Russia he risked being drafted into the army, per my friend, since Russia has mandatory military service.

“I will really be shocked if she knew that the brothers were responsible for the bombing and warned them that they had become suspects.”

I won’t speculate whether she warned them or not, or whether she had any prior knowledge of the attack, but I find it hard to believe that she would not recognize them after seeing the video and pictures.

^^ That’s a good point, assuming that she had time to watch TV.

Katherine Russell lived with her husband, not at her parents’ home. I’ve seen the following info from several news sources.

[Boston bombing suspect’s widow is assisting investigation, lawyer says - CNN.com](http://www.cnn.com/2013/04/22/us/boston-suspect-wife/index.html)

I’ve also seen where she’s returned in the last few days to the home where she lived with her husband to pick up some personal items and her pet cat and transfer them to her parents’ home.
