Will my age affect my possibility of getting accepted to Columbia U or other small liberal art colleges? I will be reaching sixteen during my freshman year at college. What do you think? Will it work for me or against me? Or it doesn’t matter? Should I say anything about it in my essay? Also, do you think I will find students of my age? Thank you

(I will be 15 when I begin my freshman year, and will reach sixteen within 2 months. Also, I am an international student applying from Asia.)

You will be reaching turning 16 when you start your freshman year? First, none of us can tell you if you’ll be accepted. What outlook each college adopts towards your application will also differ. Keep in mind however that your achievements and talents will come far before your age in an admissions consideration. More importantly, you’ll have to be able to prove that you possess the maturity and independence that will allow a 16-year old international student to survive in Columbia and NYC in a collegiate environment where precocity alone is not enough.

Having said that, I wish you the best of luck in your future endeavors.
