Aggie Summer Institute

What is the ‘Aggie Summer Institute’ exactly? It is scheduled for M-F in late June. Is it worth attending?

I went to the Aggie Summer Institute(ASI) last summer and it really made me appreciate a&m. It is a camp for anyone that will be in high school the following fall (so incoming highschool freshman, sophomores, juniors, and seniors). There are a few camps from all the major cities in texas like Houston, Dallas, San Antonio, and some other cities. It is a five day experience, where for the first three days you spend it with your regional group at some common meeting spot, I spent it at a junior college, they had counselers employed by A&M to talk to us about saving money for college, and other crap that is pretty boring but instructional. Then for the last two days you go to college station by charter bus with all the other groups from different cities, but you spend most of the time with your own city group. You get to stay in one of the common style dorms, and then get take a tour of the campus: they take you to kyle field and eat in the press box, get to go to the rec center, tell you about all the traditions a&m has, and walk around and tour the campus. You put down what you would like to major in and they break you off into groups, mixing students from all city groups, and you go on a tour specific to the major you put. The whole camp was free, you get free souvenirs, free meals, free room, and stuff(you can buy souvenirs from the bookstore). Also they gave a $500 scholarship to all the students that were going to be seniors in my city camp, not sure about all the other cities though. I had a fun time and you should go to take a free tour of the campus.

Wow, that sounds awesome. Thanks!

My son is registered to attend at the end of the month. Being a Senior, he will go on the Campus visit. He wants to be in the Corps of Cadets and get his mechanicial engineering degree, then join the Navy.

How many students were at your campus visit? you said that they broke down into groups based on your degree choice. Was there a Corps group as well, or just based on the degree?

Also for the “scholarships”, is there something special that one needs to do to apply or is it a given that upon completion the students get it?

Thanks for taking time answering…

Hi troopersMom~
My son is also interested in the Corps/Navy ROTC. We didn’t know about the Summer Institute, but he will be attending the Spend the Day with the Corps event on June 26. There’s another one scheduled for July, so that might be a way to get some insight into the Corp if they don’t cover that during the Summer Institute. Is your son also interested in the Naval Academy? It’s all pretty exciting! Good luck!
