ah the upcoming summer

so DD is headed back from Israel in a couple of weeks, ready to enter RPI in the fall.

She had very much wanted to be a counselor at Camp Ramah New England for the summer (though this would make packing for college tight). she did everything right, getting her app in, talking to Ramah folks who were visiting in Israel, getting the required 3 references lined up.

Except one never came through - the preschool teacher (“ganenet”) at the preschool where she did her community service. Even when DD (after waiting months) printed the reference form and translated it into Hebrew herself. We still dont know if the ganenet sent it in, and it may be too late anyway (although ramah says sometimes they need someone from the wait list). DD is very, very unhappy, per my wifes report of their last convo.

Life lesson - FLEXIBILITY - if someone is supposed to give you a recommendation, and they are late, dont wait - get someone else to do it. Right away. “well at least this didnt happen to her at a more important phase”.

She may apply for a summer position at CTY, but probably late for that. Instead she may just chill - see her friends, maybe take some kind of math course (we are a little nervous she’s been away from math this long - not all Archies are math geeks by any means, but this has been a strong point for DD, and she hasnt ruled out switching to Civil E) and maybe some drawing course (she seems to have not done much of that for the year, and it would be helpful to not be rusty). And we’ve been talking about a time management class of some kind. So DW is all set for DD to have a busy non-work summer. Ive suggested she do some volunteer work at Habitat for Humanity - DW is skeptical of the value. and of course there are doctor appts, etc. Not to mention family fun time :)

I hope your daughter can be as philosophical about the disappointment as you.

Hi BBD; glad to “see” you here again. Someone asked about you over at the “2014 and Beyond” thread.

My son also missed out because a person he asked for a reference never sent it in. That cost him a $5,000 scholarship. It was especially disheartening because he got this particular email about 2-3 weeks too late asking when it was due. This guy even used the email my son sent that clearly gave the due date. Errrrr. Live and learn.
