aha, a newbie! You know what it's about.

I just discovered these forums today, and after flipping through these threads and hearing some very sound advice, I decided I’d give this a go as well.

My goal is an Ivy, and I have a particular love for Yale. I also wouldn’t mind attending Duke, Columbia, Northwestern, or Brown.

I am only a sophomore, and therefore am planning on doing many things in high school that I have not yet done, both academically and extra curricular-wise. I have started as much as I can thusfar, and can only hope that I will continue on the path I’m on without messing up. I took the PSAT for the first time freshman year, and got a 135/1350, whichever. I haven’t yet gotten back my scores for the PSAT this year, though that will be soon. I think I improved a lot, but I was pleased with a 1350 on a first shot.

So, assuming everything goes as plans and I stay on the track I’m on, here’s what should happen:

Currently, I am taking these courses:
Honors Pre-Calculus
Honors Chemistry
Honors Spanish III
Seminar (higher than Honors, but same credit) English
Seminar Civics & Economics
Dance (required, regular credit)
Newspaper (regular credit as freshman & sophomore, Honors as junior & senior)

I have made straight A’s every quarter in high school thusfar. I don’t allow myself to get B’s. It simply doesn’t happen. If I must stay up until 3am finishing something, I will, but I stay pretty much on top of things and have a pretty good work ethic. I’m hoping this trend will continue.

Projected schedule for junior & senior year:
Junior: AP Calculus AB, AP Chemistry, AP English, AP US History, AP Government & Politics, Honors Spanish IV, Honors Newspaper
Senior: AP Statistics, AP Physics B, AP English, AP Spanish, AP _____ (I can choose anything I want here. It will probably be another Social Studies course. I’ve heard AP Psych is a whole lot of busy work), Honors Newspaper, Honors International Relations, or some other business course.

Current extracurriculars:
Piano for 10 years
Girls Council-- school service club
Academic Team
Internship at a teen-run radio show
Tap & jazz (I just recently quit this, but I will be picking it up again when I have more time.)
Big Brother/Big Sister community service
Progressive Independents political club
I plan on starting a Photography Club at school next year. (I missed the deadline for creation of club this year.)

Current awards/honors:
Published writer in Christian magazine
Selected to perform in most advanced group of Multi-Piano Concert
Selected to be Youth Representative of Nominating Committe at church
Selected to be Youth Representative in hiring of youth director at church
Producer of teen-run radio show
Editorials Editor of newspaper

Projected awards/honors:
Will be Captain of Academic Team junior & senior year
Might be president of Progressive Independents junior or senior year
Will have title of founder of Photography Club next year
Will probably end up Editor-in-chief of newspaper senior year, and will definitely have a high leadership role.
Am planning on running for a leadership role in Girls Council junior or senior year-- aiming for president. This is highly likely, since all of the girls in my grade in the club, who will mainly be voting on this, consider me the “responsible brainiac” of the group and will probably vote for me.

I might work towards getting my Silver & Gold Girl Scout award as well. You don’t actually have to be a Girl Scout to do this, so that’s handy.

So those are my stats. I know a lot of it is projected/estimations, but I have faith in myself that I will excel in taking 5 APs junior and senior year. I have never had much difficulty with heavy workloads. I am more worried about my ECs-- I am not an athlete at all. I’m considering taking lacrosse in the spring. Suggestions, comments, anything? Sorry for the length.

bumpity bump.

man, you still have a long way to go…i would strongly STRONGLY suggest you take SAT II right now.

I’ll be taking the SAT II’s in at least 3 subjects, I’m already planning on doing that. And I will be taking the SAT junior and senior year, of course. I don’t have plans to take the ACT, but I might if the oppurtunity arises.

AP Statistics after AP Calc AB? I would go for Calc BC if it is available. Also, you plan on taking calculus before physics, so you might want to take AP Physics C instead of AP Physics B. Yes, psychology is full of busy work, and colleges recognize it as one of the easier AP courses (along with AP Environmental Science).

Oh, is statistics considered a lot easier than Calculus? If it’ll be better to take Calc AB junior and then Calc BC senior, I can certainly do that. And so you seem to think that if I have already taken Calc junior year, I will be fully prepared to take Physics C senior? I am pretty good at math, so perhaps that’ll be an option.

Statistics is easier (although very useful), but I suggested Calc BC because most people continue in the calculus track. Yes, you will be prepared for Physics C, especially if you are good at math. I’ve never take physics before, but I took Calc AB last year. I’m taking Physics C this year, and it’s not too bad. By the way, you’re on the right track for a good college…Duke is a great school.

WOW NO WONDER PEOPLE HAVE SUCH HIGH GPAS ON THIS FORUM. You take honors chemistry then the AP for it? In my school you just take the AP and if you take honors before it you don’t get any credits for it, I don’t even think you are allowed to take it.

If I took a standard class before taking its AP then the sciences would be mad easy. But anyways.

Good grades good classes. You will get into Ivies if you go into science or ESPECIALLY ENGINEERING. SCIENCE/ENGINEERING LOVES GIRLS. Especially engineering. So yeah, you are definately in if you do one of those. Humanities migh tbe harder but you could still make it. Best of luck.

1350’s tough for any ivy league (or any other school you listed), but my PSAT was like 150 points lower than my SAT so who knows.

skip calc ab. i didn’t take it, i’m in calc bc now and it’s not bad thus far. they’ll cover all the material you would learn in ab, just at an accelerated pace. study some for your sat’s now (or after you take it the first time) and you’ll be fine - studying for act’s improved my scores, for sure. and remember: don’t quit anything you’re involved with! i think colleges really want to see continuity with your extracurrics

Just careful with going to bed at 3AM… I think you are over working yourself and you can really hurt yourself by getting that little sleep. By attempting to acheive that much, you will ultimately fail which would not be good. Take it easy on yourself… If you are up until 3AM, then you should take a less rigourous schedule. If you are taking that long to do all that work, it is a sign that it may be too much for you to handle.
More so, if you are staying up until 3AM with just honors and seminar classes, then are you going to sleep in your junior and senior years? I congratulate you on the fact that you want to go to Ivy League schools, but you are hurting yourself more than helping yourself by doing this.
