Ahoy mateys! Seasteading!

Peter Thiel, a prominent venture capitalist of Paypal fame, has invested $500,000 in The Seasteading Institute (TSI). TSI is attempting to create and propagate a prototype of a seasteading home (basically a home in international waters).

Check out the FAQ:

This project is very fascinating for several innovations:
-politics (international waters is government-free)
-technology [url=<a href=“http://www.wired.com/imageviewer/?imagePath=/images/article/full/2008/05/seastanding_630px.jpg&imageCaption=An+artist’s+conception+of+what+a+large+seastead+based+on+the+spur+design+could+look+like.+The+Seasteading+Institute+envisions+vast+clumps+of+these+structures+forming+city-states+in+the+open+ocean.
Illustration%3A+<a+href%3D"http%3A%2F%2Fisaacdesigns.blogspot.com"> Valdemar+Duran<%2Fa><%2Fem>&imageCredit=]wired.com[/url”>http://www.wired.com/imageviewer/?imagePath=/images/article/full/2008/05/seastanding_630px.jpg&imageCaption=An+artist’s+conception+of+what+a+large+seastead+based+on+the+spur+design+could+look+like.+The+Seasteading+Institute+envisions+vast+clumps+of+these+structures+forming+city-states+in+the+open+ocean.
Illustration%3A+<a+href%3D"http%3A%2F%2Fisaacdesigns.blogspot.com"> Valdemar+Duran<%2Fa><%2Fem>&imageCredit=]wired.com[/url]
-economics (how will people interact in such radically different situations?)

That is pretty freaking awesome.

I don’t think people fully realize the implications if this project is successful. Either that or they don’t care about the future…

If this project is successful, expect government as we now know it to collapse as people can now choose their governments.

And here are some corny jokes. Keep in mind that the people behind it are rich silicon valley type nerds. Also, they make their own laws.:

“What do you call the group of people who steal from the seasteaders?”
“Ocean’s 14”

“It’s like the polygamist compound. Except nobody’s getting laid.”
