Air Conditioning a Big Deal?

How hot does it get at UMD? Is getting a dorm with air conditioning a thing that I should definitely aim for or is it not that big a deal?

Just bring a fan and you’ll be fine! It really is only hot for a few weeks during the year, and if windows are open and fans are going, it’s not that bad. Plus, the lounges are air conditioned, so there is a place to escape to if necessary.

A double headed window fan will save your life. But there really isn’t a way to aim for an air conditioned dorm as a freshman.

Just make sure that you and your roommate each bring a fan. In some ways, it’s kind of a rite of passage for freshmen at UMD…hopefully this will change at some time, but you’ll make it through the few bad weeks.

When is the hottest time? September? My d claims this is not going to be a big bother for her …but… We are from Boston - I can only imagine the heat in the upper floors of some dorms…we visited the scholars dorms and I can see it would be a problem

Well the thermometer on my window fan is telling me it’s 77 degrees next to the open window in April. Earlier it was about 86.
This was a pretty average day for either the first or last month of the semester. But everyone has to deal with it.

I mean, my apartment technically has A/C, but it is still warm during the hotter days. I didn’t have A/C at all last year, and I honestly don’t see what the big deal is about A/C. Thousands and thousands of students have survived perfectly fine without it. :)
