Airport TSA long lines-- Yikes!

I hope you don’t experience the wait time at the interview that I did. I think I waited an hour past my scheduled time. Probably different situations at different locations - and maybe they’ve stream-lined the process since I went through it.

I still remember the interviewer peering at a computer screen, then saying to me, “In the last five years you’ve been to CountryName, CountryName, CountryName, CountryName, CountryName, etc.”, listing all the foreign countries I’d traveled to. Obviously, every time you come through immigration it’s tracked, but that was really a Big Brother moment for me!

@Momofadult, good to know. I’ll bring my Kindle!

We had no wait (but they do not allow walk ins in Portland). We got there early, the TSA guy took us early and together even though we had two appts, and we were done by the time our original first appt was scheduled. Hopefully your appt will be more like that! We drove two hours for a five minute appt

My appointment was at 8:15. I was out of there at 8:21.

We just had our Global Entry interviews last night at LAX. No wait to get in, even though we were a bit early. Interviews were quick for all three of us. Only issue was dealing with Los Angeles traffic.

Still need to do interview for my son, who will be coming back from a summer program near Denver. Has anyone tried doing the interview at a different airport than the appointment? We may have extra time in Denver, but his appointment is at LAX.

I have not had luck getting an appointment at other airports that I travel to. My appointment is in Sandford, FL at the end of Sept., it is almost 2 hrs away from where I live. It was the first available appointment. Tampa, Orlando, JFK, Newark and San Francisco, (all places that I regularly travel to or through) are booked until December or January! None of those take walk ins.

Decided to not try global entry. Just the pre check is valuable and did it in 5 min at local Identigo (fingerprint) place. To do global would have had to drive a couple of hours to an airport that did them. D will get her money’s worth in flights between NY area and Chicago. Got her number online within 48 hours and letter in 4 days

Flew Tampa to Seattle (with a plane change) and back last month. Both H and I preprinted boarding passes, then got a second version when we paid for our single checked bag and both of us had all passes stamped to go through the precheck line. A pleasant surprise- kept shoes on. Got told to remove some stuff only if the machine beeped. No looking at the bag of 3 ouncers…

We had evening flights and were there more than two hours earlier than flight times. Had suppers at the airports (sorry Tampa, even the changes are nothing compared to Seattle’s fare). The least stressful situations ever. Well, not counting the long time it took to board in Tampa so we had to wait out a thunderstorm- we still made our transfer airport with plenty of time, made it up in the air. Took so much less time to board in Seattle- how cum??? Wish they still boarded from back to front like decades ago, sigh. Were 20 minutes late returning since our plane waited for 21 passengers from a delayed flight.

I wonder how the couple who complained about (audible comments I overheard) the parenting of a noisy toddler on the first leg home while waiting to deplane did on their second leg- I had talked to the large family group of two Burmese women with many children in line for boarding and knew they had the same destination. Yes the child was sometimes annoying on a night flight, but parenting and flying are difficult. Serves the complainers right if they were near them again…

Noisy babbies/toddlers? Bring it on!

That’s why I carry a whole bag of foam earplugs-- for wailing babies and for getting seated in the back of MD90s.

Just went to and returned from Quebec. Lines at security were far worse at 6am than at 4pm. Nearly missed the outbound flight and had to run from security to catch it. Thank heavens the gate agent saw we were coming and held the door an extra 5 minutes.

Anyone use their Southwest points to get TSA precheck deal that they offered?

Where was the SW offer?

A friend had his TSA precheck appt yesterday at the Orlando airport. They took him early and he was done in less than 5 minutes. Waited 2 weeks for the appointment. AND he received his KTN this morning. 24 hours.

SW sent an email out. Its good til Aug 22 (to use the points for TSA precheck)

I see it now. I don’t currently have 9000 points as I redeemed my points for an airline ticket recently.

DH and I keep getting TSA pre-check without having applied for it. I guess we are now considered elderly.
Anyway, flew from O’Hare to NY last night with zero line at pre-check and very short regular line. We’ve flown several times this summer on short extended weekend trips, and have not encountered the lines that were being described several months ago. Airports include LAX, JFK, ORD, LGA at all hours.

Just got back from dropping off H at the airport. He just texted me that the TSA pre-check line was longer than the regular one but still worth it not to take off shoes, get laptop and liquids out etc. Of course, this was at an airport where the lines never seem to get long, so this meant the difference between almost no wait and waiting a few minutes.
