^^Everyone will find something to be offended about. People are still bothered by this fact?

Really good article fractalmstr. It is a tad sad that we’ve developed into this uptight culture where everything is offensive to someone. I cannot for the life of me figure out how we got here.

I can. :slight_smile:

The first accuser isn’t being vilified because she was on Hannity. She’s being questioned because her story doesn’t add up and she seems now to be a hypocrite.

I can guess what you’re thinking. Snowflakes? Liberals? Progressives?

What I see as cultural progress and maturation others may see as being “too sensitive”. I think taken as a whole it is a net positive. And lets not forget that a lot of the “crazy stories of being PC” are fanned or sensationalized by the media for their own benefits…

^^
I agree. While the PC culture can be annoying at times depending on our individual temperaments, it does reflect an increased concern for marginalized or oppressed groups. I also view that as a “net positive.”

Many, many years ago I was a young actor. I was pinched, rubbed, patted, kissed(sometime with tongue) and flashed by both sexes (and I am hetero). I guess in the context of today, I was"violated", but I never considered myself to be. Show biz is different…you are often changing with the rest of the cast, and it is quite common to see everyone in varying states of nudity. I had one eminent older actress come up to me and straddle(without touching) my face with her crotch(no undies). It was embarrassing for me, yes, but as hazing goes it was pretty mild, and she did it with a great sense of style. I also had many propositions, some by older, less than sober actors of both sexes. There was a bit of groping in most cases.

 Maybe I'm just insensitive, but I came through all of it unscarred, and perhaps even enriched. None of these people  meant to harm me, and I didn't allow them too. I can even understand. Case closed, for me. Some random thoughts;
  • I draw a big distinction between that and being targeted by a sexual predator. I had that happen twice, both when I was under 16, by men who were much older. I escaped the clutches of both, but as I look back on it, both those guys deserved to be in jail.
  • one other "victim" in all of this are the people who don't get the job(or part, in the case of acting) because they refuse to sleep with boss/director/superior. I can still remember being in shows where one cast member was decidedly subpar. We all rolled our eyes, knowing that it was because she(or he) was the director's/or whomever's "squeeze". How about the person who is more talented, or just as talented, but don't get the part because they refuse to "service" the person in charge? I am not a prude, but ethically i found this part of the acting world hard to reconcile. Actresses have it worse, but both sexes run up against it, as well as minors.
  • I draw a line between being groped, and being raped. Like a big, fat line. If you are getting groped, repeatedly, then it's time for you to get out of there. What are you, stupid? Being held down and forcibly entered is a completely different thing.

I have no idea what happened for sure in the Franken case for sure. The Senator from MN certainly comes through it looking like an immature teen at best, but she seems to be playing this up like it was a major ordeal, when to me it was anything but. UNless some more facts come to light, I don’t know that I could care less about either of them.

The model of a net gain is a good one because it inherently acknowledges that there are gains and drawbacks.

Note: Franken will incur costs for this scandal, even if he isn’t pushed out of the Senate. First, I think it probably eliminates any thought he might have had of running for President. Second, I suspect it will significantly impact sales for the new book he recently released. If you dislike him, that’s probably not enough; if you like him, it might be too much.

You’re a guy, right, @57special ? A man near his peak testosterone years being harassed by a woman almost shouldn’t count. It is not accompanied by fear of escalation because we have one-punch knockout power over our harassers. Even with guys it was pretty easy to brush it off (not talking about guys getting raped, obviously). I, too, had endured the occasional grope, grab, fondle, or inappropriate proposition in my younger years but they are hardly worth mentioning.

Without fear, it is not traumatizing. No emotional suffering and no lasting effects. Not worth mentioning.

@Magnetron

What is the woman is the boss or a female college professor?

I firmly believe this has less to do with biology - this is a power and aggression issue.

My husband once said: Never underestimate a man’s desire to feel powerful.

36 women who worked with Franken at SNL are sticking up for him:

I have to say that I haven’t seen this type of support from staff and coworkers for any of the other men recently accused – have I missed it, or is this unusual? Onesy-twosey, yes. But his senate staff did the same.

I just can’t imagine someone straddling my face with their crotch as a form of hazing but doing it with “a great sense of style”. I’ll take your word for it, but it seems like the world’s biggest oxymoron.

Two of them were female bosses, one a manager and one the business owner, @TomSrOfBoston . They asked, I said no, never brought up again in a serious manner. The owner still pinched my behind quite often. I am mostly immune to being intimidated and have a typical guys’ immunity to sexual talk.

I did have a male boss who was horrible with the female employees, very Harvey Weinsteinish. I found out about it my last months there when one of them sued. It turns out he had been sued before and nobody told me. Part of being an engineer like me is sitting in a back corner unconnected to the front office or the production floor.

@Magnetron that is untrue. With #metoo, my nephew, a strong man, shared a story in which he was harassed and cajoled by a drunk woman in college wanting to have sex. He had trouble extricating himself without hurting her. What followed was vile language and emasculating language. If that happened to a woman, someone might have paid attention. This episode has stayed with him and hurts him to think about it 7 years later.

Thinking this stuff is funny is a big part of the problem.

" I came through all of it unscarred…" Maybe because you bought into the, for want of a better term, groundrules. It was acceptable to you. The case here is what’s not.

Has anyone brought up the settlement of Rep. Conyers case yet? Sigh. He was 86 years old when he undertook the harassment. Our tax dollars paid the settlement.
