Well then I hope the voters of Alabama do the right thing and not vote him in. Seems like the voters ought to be saying who stays and who goes or at least in theory.
Doesn’t surprise me Gillibrand is getting skewered. She put herself out on that limb several times with questionable actions and the limb just might break. She played her cards wrong this time I suspect. The media can turn on someone pretty fast. The media is playing it pretty close to chest on Franken I think waiting to see how the public reacts. She’ll either come out on top or say bye bye to any further political aspirations.
I already sent an email to Debbie Stabenow when she appeared on a list of women who called for Franken’s resignation and told her I was disappointed in all of them for presuming guilt and not supporting an investigation and railroading one of their own out of office.
It makes me absolutely SICK TO MY STOMACH and FURIOUS that Al Franken is resigning when the Senate and House are FULL or men who actively campaign and vote against women’s interests and we have an admitted sexual assaulter sitting in the Oval Office and a sexual harrasser sitting on the Supreme Court.
@Consolation, would you believe that Franken should stay if his accusers were all telling the truth? I’m wondering whether your anger is over the process, or over a notion that his offenses were too minor to merit expulsion.
Sticking to the topic of Franken, I thought this was a very salient sentence from his resignation speech today:
“I, of all people, am aware that there is some irony in the fact that I am leaving while a man who has bragged on tape about his history of the sexual assault sits in the Oval Office and a man who has repeatedly preyed on young girls campaigns for the Senate with the full support of his party.”
And the media is stunningly quieter than expected. The NYTs comments are more telling about public sentiment than the media who don’t want to quite line up with the Lynch mob nor line up with the Deniers. That ought to speak volumes about who Al Franken really is. I really can’t wait for the next book.
I think the public recognizes that there is some actual evidence against Franken, and his statements against Trump and Moore are just a start on his political rehabilitation. I have no doubt he will be back on SNL in a few months, but probably not as the church lady.
I dunno… I bet he could do a pretty good church lady riff on Roy Moore. He’s been bottling up his comedian side for 8 years – I bet he could be wickedly funny and on point if he decides to take on Washington via comedy.
Unless I missed it, Franken hasn’t DENIED this accusers. He sort of apologized, but said he didn’t remember any impropriety, but also couldn’t say if there would be more accusations.
I think he was compelled to resign because Dems knew there was fire that was causing all that smoke around him, and because they can’t condemn the loathsome Repubs representatives (and in the White House) with Franken in the Senate. What’s good for the goose is good for the gander.
I will also say, there is nothing funnier to me (in a sick, grim kind of way) than the aghast defense of Franken on FOX News.
Yes well it is not as if people haven’t been saying “wait a minute” for the past two weeks. The only people with their fingers in their ears was the Lynch mob. Now they can focus their attention on just how many constituents they lost in the rush to judgement. I am so tired…this insane rush to judgement has been bumbling up for five years.
“I also deem him unfit because he has been tossed off the court twice, and everyone seems to skip over that little nugget.”
How can we hope to rank the reasons for his unfitness? Insofar as he is campaigning to be a federal lawmaker, not (let’s say) a women’s gymnastics coach, his open trampling of the Constitution and its supremacy seems like it should be at the top of the list. But what about the nostalgia for slavery? The credible and documented story about the 14-year-old? His present-day lying and slandering of his accusers? It’s a cruise-ship buffet of unfitness. I haven’t even gotten to the cowboy costume.
@hanna, you forgot the part where he thinks women shouldn’t be elected officials. And shouldn’t be able to vote for elected officials either. A cruise-ship buffet indeed.
“Unless I missed it, Franken hasn’t DENIED this accusers. He sort of apologized, but said he didn’t remember any impropriety, but also couldn’t say if there would be more accusations.”
I will make a prognostication. “In the next few weeks” Franken will decide not to resign due to overwhelming support expressed by the people of Minnesota.
I wouldn’t be too sure about that. At my knitting group the other night no one thought he should stay even though there were regrets over losing him. We were looking forward to the replacement of Bro Culture.
