All A`s and a C

I just got my final grades for the completion of 7th grade. I got a C- in Algebra I. I wont be able to take honors math in 8th grade this fall. I will start applying to boarding schools this fall. Assuming I return to straight A`s, will this bring down my chances to get in to a top tier school for 9th grade?

On paper, everything else looks good. I play sports Have all As except for this one grade. Im hispanic Don`t need FA Won lots of academic and sports awards Do charity work over seas. yada yada yada

Whats not on paper, well this is the thing, I got lymes disease and missed some school for a while. I was able to bring up all my grades but I couldnt make up the missed work in math and I bomped the final.

I’d look for a way to retake Algebra this summer, ace it, then give the boarding schools the Lyme disease explanation.

how can you retake a class during the summer?

summer school or–better yet–a community college class–most will have developmental math classes (not for college credit) that are the equivalent of high school algebra 1 and 2

If you were my child I would have you go straight to the principal and ask how you can prove that you should be in the Honors section next year. Be clear that you are not challenging the grade (this is important), but that you really feel that you can meet the standards that you didn’t meet on the final by the end of the summer. Ask if it would be possible to retake the final at a fixed date (again, only to prove that you can do the honors section). Once cleared, find a program, tutor, junior college course, etc that offers High School Algebra.

Right now it doesn’t seem like the school thinks you are capable of the work for honors. Prove them wrong.

Another option is to buy the Aleks on-line Algebra program, run through it independently, then ask to take the final again–as Neato says, only to prove you can take the more advanced class.

All of this would show a prep school something important about how you face challenges.

Thanks for mentioning ALEKS. It’s what my son used to test out of Algebra at his school. It’s cheap and likely much more thorough than your 7th grade class. I think he did the entire Algebra course in three weeks, the majority of it during his one week winter break in 7th grade. It was perfect for him.

There is a free 3-day trial before you pay the fee. Also, you’ll be able to print out a report showing how the course corresponds to your state standards.

I am actually doing the course on Aleks right now for Algebra 2.
