All Dorms Information

I’ve found this helpful site that may answer some of your questions.
Of course, this page does not have all the information you may seek.
I noticed that it doesn’t bluntly tell you if it is Gemstone/Honor’s only or non-Gemstone/Honor’s, etc.

[Residence Halls at a Glance](Halls at a Glance | Department of Resident Life | University of Maryland)

Also, feel free to provide any informal knowledge and any pro’s/con’s about the dorms.
(Ex. Easton is the ‘worst’ dorm, Ellicott(Gemstone only) has freshmen/sophomores.)

Remember, please help to provide any informal knowledge and any pro’s/con’s about the dorms!
I will edit this post and add the information submitted concerning dorms.
I hope this is a big help!
Thank you.

Wow thanks Justin
What a great info!

Everyone bump this thread! :)

thanks for posting, Justin!!! We’ll have to make sure this is handy in August when all the dorm assignments come out!!!

Wow - thanks Justin! Great info to add to my list from pima!

I do have one question, which may seem silly since I’ve been on this thread for months now, but…what does ‘bump’ mean???

Thank you! JustinYo. Will be saving this info for sure!
I have started a separate thread re: off-campus housing, but no posts yet. My son accepted his Spring 2010 admission and will be particiating in the Freshman Connection program. OCHO gave us information on 3 apt. complexes - University Towers, Parkside, and University Club. Saw the first 2, but because of our schedule when visiting, were not able to view University Club. Have been gathering info and talking to other students. Any info on these housing options? Would appreciate any comments. Thanks!!

Does anyone know the typical dorms that new incoming freshman are assigned to?
I’m looking for non-honors/scholars/gemstone dorms in particular but any info is helpful. (:

I know Easton and Elkton are typical dorms that incoming freshman are assigned to.
Wicomico is a typical dorm for Honors Humanities.

well, yes, elkton and easton are the most likely dorms for freshman, and occasionally you’ll be put in some in Cambridge with some of the scholars programs, even if you aren’t in scholars, some people are just put there to fill the rooms, probs same with denton. And in terms of Washington and Harford and Frederick, etc, all the ones on Washington Quad/south campus, you basically won’t get into that as a freshman unless you have a health excuse or like, incredible good luck.

This is great Justin…thanks! ^^

Your welcome everyone! It’s a big help to me too anyways. Just wanted to share. Couldn’t keep this kind of helpful info to myself.

Do you think there’s anyway you could ask to change where you dorm after you’ve been assigned a dorm? Is there a way to request a specific dorm before you’re assigned one?

I remember reading somewhere about a room transfer request, but it probably requires special circumstances, like allergies or something.

i agree it would be incredibly difficult and you would have to show a great reason to do so. UMD housing is very high demand, and short supply.

agree with pima…you’re better off going in to it telling yourself that you’ll make the best of your rooming/dorm situation… You really can’t request a specific dorm as a freshman, and changing after the assignments are made (before you move in) is probably NOT going to happen. IF you do have a medical condition that REQUIRES air conditioning, you’ve got to have it documented (by a dr.) and filed with the university by June, I think. If there is a conflict of personalities with roommates, you’ll need to try to work through it; sometimes (NOT frequently) you’re able to change roommates. What usually happens is that you end up spending most of your time with friends. There are roommate horror stories from every school, but the far, far majority is that things will work out fine. You may not end up being BFF with your first college roommate, but as long as you go into it with the idea that you’ll make it work, you’ll probably be fine.

What dorm is closest to the engineering building and science building?

Also, are there engineering floors in dorms?

Thanks! Will be applying next year, OOS, no car, so definitely need housing info! Biomedical engineering major hopefully.

Centreville and the other dorms in the Cambridge Community are the closest to the engineering and science buildings. If you’re worried about the time it takes to walk to class, it’s still ok to live in the Ellicott Community. That’s still only about a 10 min walk.

The 6th floor of Ellicott Hall houses students in FLEXUS, the Women in Engineering living and learning community. Other than that, there’re no floors for just engineering majors, but since Ellicott also houses Gemstone students, there will be plenty of engineering students in the building.

June is here and I hope this thread will help with any dorming questions.

The literature I received yesterday said that Ellicott has 9 floors.
Also do freshman have to do anything further than request housing? Like they don’t get to pick a dorm right?
Also are Gemstone students automatically assigned to Ellicott or do they have to request it?

how likely is it that my roommate request will go through with a non honors student ?? I am in the University Honors program, and my friend is not. We sent in a request for Denton Hall about a month ago… and they said they would try but that it wouldnt be guaranteed. Anyone ever do this before and have it go through ?

The thing you need to realize is dorm assignments are done on a point basis system, currently you have none, so you are basically going to be assigned to rooms that they have openings. As far as dorms if you are scholars, honors, or gemstone, they like to dorm you all together, i.e. 90% of ds’s floor was filled with scholars government. None were put on the other side of Centreville (North and South). If you are gemstone, unless all of Ellicott is filled you will be in Ellicott.

The chance of a friend non-honors getting in with you is iffy. You will probably be placed on the bottom of the pile, and if there is room than they will give it, but if not then they won’t. I know of a non-honors student that did dorm in Denton during their freshman yr, but that was 2 yrs ago. It is all going to be based on how many upperclassman move out, the fewer that leave, the less openings for non honors

DS returned from orientation to say that there is a window of I believe he said two weeks after moving in to request a different roommate or a move to another room. This was the first time I had heard of this, but I thought it might be helpful.

Yes, but than you are going into fill in the spot. I would consider this as the can’t stand my roommate and need out issue.
