My school is currently putting on Seussical the Musical, and I’m Gertrude. My director came up with the idea of sing “All for You” from the show as one of my songs. I originally was gonna sing “Come Out of the Dumpster” from the Wedding Singer and “Whenever I Dream” from A New Brain, and we thought of replacing “Whenever I Dream” with the song from Seussical because it too is a character piece. I’d like to get some opinions on this. The acting for “All for You” is so much easier and consistent then “Whenever I Dream”. The schools I’m auditioning for are Roosevelt University, Wagner College, and Emerson College. Along with Marymount, but I just sing one song (Come Out of the Dumpster) for that audition. Thank you so much for your imput!

Even though this isn’t the focus of the question I just want to let you know that I’m pretty positive (though not sure) that Marymount only wants songs from “standard” MT rep, not contemporary songs like “Come Out Of The Dumpster”

Well, I’m using All For You as one of my “character” pieces for schools that ask for a 3rd piece. I don’t know if I would open an audition with it but it does show a lot of range so why not.

Thanks for the input! And Marymount, by wanting a song from “standart MT” means they won’t the song from the musical theatre genre–no pop/rock or wild zany styles! You’re post scared me a little, so I called my voice teacher, who then called one of his friends who is a professor of musical theatre at Marymount! So I think I’m good with that! Thanks a bunch!

Oh, my bad. =P I always misinterpreted “standard” MT as more old school shows, less pop-ish stuff. But that’s good news seeing as I’d rather do something more modernish. =)

“Standard” MT means a song from a published musical of any era. “Classic” MT generally means shows written before 1960. Many schools do require one song to be from the classic era, so it’s a good idea to have one or two prepared.
