All four sections?

do u have to take all four sections of the ACT, or do you choose the ones that you want to take?

Yes, you have to take the entire test, unless you want your composite to be like a 9.

but then what is this i hear about people taking a seperate writing section?

No, you have to take 4 sections which are English, Math, Reading, and Science.

The ACT now has an optional writing test. You can decide if you want to take it or not. In my opinion, I think it’s better to take it because a lot of colleges want the writing portions.

Anyway, you can only choose if you want to take the Writing Portion, but you have to take the 4 Mulitple Choice Sections.

what is in the writing section and is it hard?

They give you a topic to talk about. For example, your school wants to have uniforms. Do you support the uniforms or not? Explain why or why not.

They won’t question you about a certain school subject like physics or anything. It’s a subjective question meaning there is no right answer. They want to see how well you can plan and write an essay in 30 mins. (that’s the time limit for the Writing Portion.)

Visali gives a good description. You will basically be writing an argumentative essay in which you defend one opinion or another based on the pro/cons of the prompt within 30 minutes. They look for language elements – style, diction and syntax, development, and so on. Check out actstudent.org for a better picture.
