Just tonight I’ve realized all my schools are under 30%, and my stats aren’t up to par, or maybe they are and college confidential posts are just freaking me out (you know the stigma behind CC). My college advisor is really worried about me, and kinda treating me like a lost cause at this point and focusing on other students.
SAT: 1310 (new) I’m retaking it, but I’ll most likely get the same score.
GPA (W): 4.09 - I had all A’s junior year, and so far senior year. I had half A’s & B’s sophomore and freshman. I also take all honors and some AP (my school doesn’t offer much)
EC: I go to a performing arts school, and focus on acting for 3 hours a day
I’ve starred in a feature film (good production value, its not crappy looking)
I’ve worked in large regional theatres
my 9th grade year I won the national Innovative app invention and programmed an app with my teammates.
I’ve done stuff like yearbook and summer intensives and yadda yadda, but that stuff has no real weight in my life.
I’m not a very strong writer (and my essay topics aren’t too interesting), but I think my recommendations are good.
I’m for real freaking out. Is it hard to get into college? Do my EC’s give me some advantage? I cant gauge anything, please help.
No one is a lost cause on October 31! You have plenty of time to research additional options. Are you looking for a college to continue your performing arts experiences? Would you prefer to be in New York or Los Angeles?
Yes most of those are very competitive. There are lots of safer choices you can still apply to.
There is no reason to panic, many are not past the deadline.
Curious why your college counselor was not “worried” about things much earlier in the process…shouldn’t s/he have been advising you to have some better fits (at least in terms of selectivity) on your list? (That said, Fordham is likely less selective than the others on your list.)
Plenty of time to add safety schools to your list. In addition you can apply non-binding EA to Fordham (if you can get application in by 11/1) and if you get in then you have your safety – assuming you checked that the schools on your list will be affordable.
How about keeping just one out of the set of Penn, Michigan, and Cornell? Add your state research university as the safety. Add 2 another universities whose acceptance rates are around 50% that also match to your stats. So you have a total of 7 universities on your list.
"Boston University
Syracuse
Fordham
Penn
Cornell
University of Michigan
I want to major in something STEM like math or computer science, but I’m still going to continue performing."
Here are some similar schools with higher acceptance rates than 30% and strong in the subjects that you like: UMiami, GWU, Villanova, URichmond. UNCCH and UVA are at 30% (but harder out of state) and Wake Forest is 29%. Also, Catholic U in DC has a phenomenal Math program yet has an overall acceptance rate of 75%.
@Endora That may just be the deadline for early action schools, ours was the same way with naviance as they need time to send in scores/recs for Nov 1st.
@1187447 You should be allowed to add colleges for the Regular Decision deadline (1/1 for most) And you may want to add a different safety if you don’t like your current choices (Temple and Wagner). What state are you in? NY? We can give suggestions based on what state you are in.
However, your stats are actually pretty good! Who says a 4.09 isn’t good!!! 1310 on SAT may not get you into the very top tier but you can still get into some pretty good schools.
Nothing is guaranteed but I would say you are a match and have a good shot at Fordham and Syracuse. They both have a 48% acceptance rate
The percent of those that get in, do so with this GPA and SAT:
Does your school say that you can’t add or change any? Or that you went into Naviance and the software wouldn’t permit changes?
There should be some flexibility. My D had to have her list finalized by Sept. 30 but was allowed to modify afterwards, just as long as her earliest application date did not change.
I agree, have your parents put in a call to the GC.
