My hair and I are fighting. In general, I have really good hair. I have very strong, thick hair that grows fast enough to donate over a foot of hair every other year. But I have one major problem- it’s always been so oily!

I have tried everything I can think of. Even the stuff my last stylist recommended. Normally, I’ve been able to put it up in a pony tail and at least cover it up until I can fix it but I just donated 14" and it’s a bit too short to put into a pony tail. So I need help. Does anyone have any shampoo (or other) recommendations? I just want to try to fix this problem once and for all.

I have tried most everything you can commonly find in a supermarket. Aussie’s shampoo for long hair used to work really well but they seemed to have cancelled it :(. I’m willing to pay semi-decent money for anything that will actually work. When I was swimming, it was less of an issue because the chlorine dried it out, but I rarely swim now.

Thanks :). I feel like CC has become my advice center but I trust you guys more than Amazon reviews haha.

Oh and I ended up getting an air mattress from a family member. We’ll be getting one of those vacuum sealed ones fairly soon when we settle on a size and price range.

I too have very oily hair and skin so I understand your frustration. The key with oily hair is not washing it too often because shampooing strips the oils off and makes your scalp produce more oil to replenish what is gone.

I use tresemme sp? dry shampoo spray on the day after washing, it works great for me.

It’s so hard! I’ll have to try it during a week where I don’t work. It will drive me nuts if it looks dirty at work! I hadn’t thought of shampoo spray.

After hair is freshly washed and dried, take some baby powder (corn starch type) in your hands (not large amounts), rub hands together to spread it out, and run it through your hair…starting at roots… If done at night, you can just sleep with it in and brush out in the morning. If done during the day, just let it set for 5-10 minutes and comb thru hair. Don’t sprinkle from the container onto your head, you’ll end up with white scalp spots…lol. I have sprinkled a bit on a brush…and that can work, too.

Do it again before then next sleep. when I travel, I’ve been able to go DAYs without washing my hair…and I’ve always had oily hair and skin.

(and change your pillowcase every few days!).

Some do this once they see oil in their hair, but that’s too late. Doing this pro-actively keeps oil at bay.

There are actually some movie star hairdressers that do this trick to make hair more fluffy/full. It does make thinner hair seem thicker…I know that’s not your issue. i’ve seen your pic, you have lovely hair.

Suave also has a dry shampoo spray that you can use, but the baby powder method is cheaper.

Also…avoid putting conditioner on hair by roots.

^ Lovely as long as I wash it every day! haha. But thanks

I will try that. I do wash my hair at night. I know it’s a bad habit, but since my hair is usually so dang long (and I don’t even own a blow dryer), washing at night has always been easiest.

Baby powder. Interesting. See, and this is why I post on here!

I’ve evolved to washing my hair every other day and it took a short adjustment period, but I think my hair is pretty happy with that now. It doesn’t get oily nearly as fast and my scalp is never dry or irritated.

This is sort of in the “try everything and see if something sticks advice mode” but if you live near a Lush, they are great about giving out samples of products and they’re pretty knowledgeable about what products are supposed to work for what. I use their shampoo and I love it, but I bet you could walk in and describe their issues and walk out with a few samples to try. Those may or may not work for you, but trying can’t hurt.

I looked it up. I have one near-ish to my hometown. I will stop in there next time I’m home. My mom and I are both into organic products so that will be a nice little trip. I’ve never heard of it, but I never go to the shopping center it’s in. Thanks for the tip :)

My acne was under control for a long time. However, about a month ago I switched from the pill to Implanon and my acne has definitely gotten worse. I don’t have bad acne, just annoying bumps probably from oily skin. I used to use Nature’s Cure pills and cream to combat acne and it worked really well. Maybe I should go back to using that, too.

Lush looks a touch pricey but if it works, I will buy! I’ve just bought shampoos and conditioners before that are TERRIBLE with my hair and I end up having to donate them to shelters because I can’t use them more than once. Free samples to try would be terrific.

Is implanon a progesterone based contraceptive? I switched from a combined pill to a progesterone only pill last year because of concerns of using the combined pill for many years. I noticed a significant increase in the oiliness of my skin afterwards, and I had to make adjustments to my face wash routine to accomodate it. However, I am otherwise very happy with the pop pill so I will not be switching any time soon.
