All-round development or excelling in one field?

Hey!
I will be applying this winter and i have a lot of questions running in my mind!
Something about me first:
1- I am good in studies, i.e., i maintain a 8-9th rank in my batch of 300 (and have an SAT score of 2230-first attempt). However, i had a horrible 11th grade.
2- I am a national table-tennis player (but i am not nationally ranked)
3- I am a debater, school mag editor, school prefect and a dancer in my free time.
So, basically, i am into a lot of things but i am not the BEST anywhere. Will this work against me?
Secondly, i am planning to apply to the usual HYPSM along with the other top ranked universities. What do they essentially look at? Will infrequent lapses in quality matter? Is being “average” in a lot of placed equally good as being the “best” in a select few?
