All the IVY League Deans in One Place

What is this world coming to? A friend forwarded an email to me advertising an evening with all the Ivy League deans at the Bendheim Performing Arts Center in Scarsdale, NY. The evening is called “The Gatekeepers” and will be moderated by the gentleman from the NY Times who wrote the book of the same name. “Learn How the Admissions Process Works at Top Colleges.” It’s only $40 a pop for you grownups, with a discounted $20 for students 18 and under. Any takers? I wonder where the proceeds of the evening are going to end up.

That would be an interesting evening.

I’m guessing that this is probably not the first time all of the Ivy League admissions deans have been in Scarsdale at the same time!

Interestingly enough, they are saying that they have never been on the same stage at the same time in anyone’s memory.

Let me know when it gets to Broadway.

But by that time tix will go for $110.25 a piece! ;)

Well, I can guarantee you that their show will never come to VT. They don’t even all send a rep to the annual college fair in our state. But Scarsdale…uh huh. I’m sure they will have no trouble selling tix.

I’m waiting for Mini to point out that this is another method that the Ivies use to keep high-income students in their population while remaining “need blind.” If he doesn’t do it in a few, I’m going to start in. :)

The thread title reminds me of the fact that all of the Cabinet members can’t be in one place at the same time. Somebody might try to take them out lol.

I’ll see if the people here want me (or them) to go.
Interesting event, but $$ for probably little real insight.

Is it a fund raiser? Surely the deans don’t need the $$.

It would be worth the $40 if you could be guaranteed the opportunity to ask a question or two.

Since I’m sure they will all wax eloquently about the undue pressure on college applicants, I would love to ask them all what steps they are taking to discourage applications from students who have no prayer at their respective institutions.

monydad, I’d go if I lived within driving distance, just out of curiousity. It will either be very interesting or you will need dramamine (sp?).

I don’t know anything about this program, but I would bet that the “Deans of Admission” are actually the Assistant or Associate Deans for the Scarsdale or NY Metro region. I would highly doubt that senior level people would go on this “roadshow”.

“The Deans of Admissions of the 8 colleges of the Ivy League have agreed to be interviewed on one stage for the first time in anyone’s memory and to answer your questions…” There are two more references to “The Deans of Admissions.”
If I plopped down my $40 bucks and got the runners-up, I wouldn’t be too thrilled.

warblers - I was thinking along the same lines… Scarsdale? Could be some very disappointed moms (ok, dads, students… etc) in the area. Security better be tight!

The Deans of Admissions of the 8 colleges of the Ivy League have agreed to be interviewed on 1 stage for the first time in anyone’s memory and to answer your questions at The Bendheim Theatre in Scarsdale.

Moderated by Jacques Steinberg, NY Times reporter and author of the Times best seller “The Gatekeepers”

When will it be out in DVD?

“If I plopped down my $40 bucks and got the runners-up, I wouldn’t be too thrilled.”

Actually I think there’s a high likelihood this will happen. I can’t count the number of times my boss would sign up to speak at some conference, and then at the last minute “duck and run” and get some subordinate to do it for him.

The subordinates might be eager to do it, so they can network with the other admissions deans from the other schools to try to get better jobs.

Jacques Steinberg and the NY Times have done these community outreach/ college seminars before. I believe there was one at Hunter College a few years ago and one on Long Island. I do not think the participants were heavy hitters from the Ivy League schools. The one at Hunter had a rep. from St. John’s (or similar type school) and some reps from financial aid. The one on Long Island was at a public library. I am also sure the seminar was free. This does seem to be different than the usual seminar- so maybe it is a fund raiser.

This seems really tacky. $40?? Do they throw in a copy of the book, too?

These sorts of stunts just perpetuate the myth that an ivy degree is the be all and end all of college admissions, and therefore, life itself. No wonder so many kids feel that the name of their college determines their future.

Gatekeepers of college admissions = gatekeepers of success

Please.

With staggeringly small admit rates this year, do they really need all this pr?
